He survived a plane crash
Upon completing high school, Eastwood worked as a lifeguard in Seattle before being drafted into the United States Army in 1950. What many don’t know is that at the tender age of 21, Eastwood survived a plane crash in the Pacific. After the crash, he found himself swimming several miles to the shore, contemplating how short life can be at such a young age.

This harrowing experience later proved invaluable when Eastwood directed the film Sully: Miracle on the Hudson (2016), depicting the emergency landing of US Airways Flight 1549. Eastwood’s personal experience allowed him to empathize with the pilot’s decision to opt for a water landing, rather than risking a runway-less landing.

What captivated Eastwood about the story wasn’t just the miraculous landing but also the character of Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger. Despite facing scrutiny from the investigative board, Sully maintained his composure and made critical decisions. Eastwood found this internal conflict compelling, believing it to be a compelling element for a film.
