The View” co-host Whoopi Goldberg angered Christian-minded Americans on Monday after she insinuated that their conservative views may not align with those of the Almighty during a discussion about former President Donald Trump.
The current GOP presidential frontrunner gave a speech at the recent Faith & Freedom Coalition convention, which led Goldberg to say she hoped evangelicals would “wake up and realize that God may not be on their side the way they think he is.”
“What was shocking to me was the hypocrisy of the evangelical community, booing at the truth,” co-host Sunny Hostin offered at one point in the discussion, according to Breitbart News. “I mean, we can all have differences of opinions, but the facts remain the same. And, he did these things, so it’s almost like they were going, ‘la la la la la la la la’ like little kids because they’re still going to vote for him.”
Goldberg responded: “The evangelicals are not the evangelicals of my youth. I’ve always known evangelicals. And while we have different roads to God, they’re, you know, basically the same roads. But I don’t know who these folks are.”
You know, the thing about evangelicals that we all have to remember is that they’re human beings,” she continued. “They’re people and they’re flawed, like all of us, so, you know, when they wake up and realize that God may not be on their side the way they think he is, because someone who says, ‘I’m doing this for you,’ sounds an awful lot like, you know –”
Referring to Jesus Christ, Co-host Sara Haines chimed in and said, “The great J.C.” — a reference to Jesus Christ.
“Yeah, yeah,” Goldberg responded.
“Many of them are such good people and being taken by this charlatan, which is distressing,” Hostin claimed.
Users responded to her remarks on social media.
“Woke corporations should wake up and realize that the consumer may not be on their side,” one Twitter user noted.
“God isn’t on her side that’s for sure,” said another.
“ABC needs to fire Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar. They’re unhinged and out of control,” Act for America founder Brigitte Gabriel said earlier this month.
Last month, some fans of ABC’s “The View” said they wanted co-host Whoopi Goldberg replaced with an infamous ex-host after she made a slew of “offensive” comments about the Holocaust.
A Reddit user created a thread on the platform about the controversy and titled it: “If Whoopi is fired, should they bring back Rosie? Whoopi who I love once again said something really dumb and ABC has to be angry. If she’s fired, should they get Rosie O’Donnell back as a mod? She was good TV, IMO.”
“I would love for Rosie to come back if only to see how she would handle the Sunny issue. I also think it would be interesting to see how she interacts with Farrah. She and Elizabeth were on opposite sides politically, but did get along quite well for a while,” wrote another fan.
A third said: “I would love Rosie to come back!!”
“Bring Rosie back!!! Love her. Even as a special correspondent!” another agreed.
However, others said that she would never come back as she has “been burned too many times” by the show.
Earlier this year, Goldberg was suspended from “The View” for claiming the Holocaust was not about race. She apologized for the comments but in a new interview with the U.K. paper The Sunday Times, it appears her apology may not have been sincere.
Remember who they were killing first. They were not killing racial; they were killing physical. They were killing people they considered to be mentally defective. And then they made this decision,” the actress said.
Journalist Janice Turner explained to Goldberg that there were race laws the Nazis created against Jews and said that “Nazis saw Jews as a race.”
“Yes, but that’s the killer, isn’t it? The oppressor is telling you what you are. Why are you believing them? They’re Nazis. Why believe what they’re saying?” she said.
