Millions of people all over the world have been moved by a picture of an elderly Chinese couple holding hands while both of them are in the intensive care unit, almost seven decades of marriage melting hearts.
According to New China, Wang Yanfang, the head nurse at the intensive care unit at Yinzhou hospital in Zhejiang Province, eastern China, is allegedly to have photographed and shared the picture.
Following heart failure, the 92-year-old husband, Feng Ming, first found himself in an intensive care unit.
Sadly, his illness got worse and more of his organs began to fail prior to his diagnosis with a lung infection.
Feng was therefore dependent on a machine giving him life support and unable of interacting with people.
His family decided to stop his therapy and bring him home after understanding he was approaching the end of his life. On the other hand, he had one last wish before he left the hospital: he wanted to see his 66-year married wife.
Along with Feng, Zhang Ping, 95-year-old wife, had also been brought to the same hospital. She stayed on another floor within the institution while undergoing treatment for a shattered femur.
“The visiting hour of the intensive care unit is from three to three thirty in the afternoon,” chief nurse Wang remarked in an interview with New China. But Feng’s health is too terrible for waiting until then. Reports state that he decided to organize specifically to make sure the elderly couple could meet for what quite likely could have been their last visit.
Feng’s wife was transferred from the 14th level to the intensive care unit on the third level at Wang’s request. At that point Feng visited his wife one last time. It happened on a stretcher.
In his account of the poignant event, Wang said that Feng’s wife grabbed his hand and spoke to him in their native dialect, saying, “Don’t worry about me. I’m fine. It would help you to relax knowing that I am quite good in looking for myself.
Feng started to cry as soon as she said it, and few hours later he died in the peace of his own house. “We made an exception for the elderly couple to meet so that the touching moment can happen and be preserved,” Wang said, appreciative of our right action. “I am appreciative of the correct decision we took.”
At the same time, this is a pleasant and sad narrative. Still, it’s comforting to know that Feng and Zhang had been in each other’s life through thick and thin and that they still were profoundly in love with one another right up until the most recent occasion. That sums up love exactly.
