Jonas Harrysson has taught for nearly 16 years. During this time, he claims to have noticed a shift in how young parents are raising their children and has shared his observations on Facebook. He believes that today’s parents overindulge their children. He identifies three major ways this is occurring and how he would like to see parents change the way they raise their children. The Swedish teacher’s words have been translated into English and shared all over the world since they were posted.
“I’ve been working with children for almost 16 years, and there are a few things I’ve noticed children getting worse and worse at.”
“No. 1: It is extremely difficult for children to be bored!” There must always be something going on. Please refrain from spoiling your children. It is not dangerous for them to be bored from time to time.
“No. 2.” I’ve met a lot of parents who are overjoyed that their children can read and count before they start preschool. I’m sorry to break it to you, but reading and counting will come naturally to them. Instead, teach them to play, be good friends, and share.”
“My third point is that many children struggle to express gratitude to both children and adults.” Unfortunately, the first question is often, “Can they get a ‘extra’ one?”
“‘How come we only get one?’ is a common complaint I hear.
“What happened to the word ‘please?’ And what about ‘thanks for dinner,’ ‘thanks for the ride,’ and so on?
“I don’t have any children yet, but if I do, I’ll teach them to play, to be good friends, to be grateful, and to be bored from time to time.” When they’ve mastered those skills, I’ll teach them to read and count.”
Do you agree with Jonas’ advice? Or do you believe it’s more complicated?
