The sirens woke me at 6:12 a.m. Blue and red lights flashed across my bedroom ceiling. I was thirty-four weeks pregnant and alone. When I opened the door, Sheriff Brennan told me my elderly neighbor, Ruth Higgins, had been found dead. Then he pointed toward my mailbox. “Open it,” he said.
Inside was a thick yellow envelope stuffed with hundred-dollar bills and a handwritten letter: “If you are reading this, dear girl, I am already gone.” Ruth explained that she had watched me struggle alone after my boyfriend, Kyle, abandoned me and left me with a mortgage I couldn’t afford.
