The $5 Scam That Got the Last Laugh on Me

In 2008, I received an unexpected SMS that read: “I accidentally transferred $5 to your phone, please resend it to this phone number. Helen.” The message seemed odd, and I wasn’t sure what to make of it. Why would someone transfer money to my phone by mistake? It felt a little suspicious, but I didn’t think too much about it at first.

I checked my phone balance to see if the transfer had actually gone through. Sure enough, I saw an extra $5 in my account. This seemed even stranger. Who would send money like that and ask for it back? I couldn’t understand the logic behind it. I figured it was some sort of scam, and I wasn’t about to get involved.

Feeling a little irritated, I decided to respond. I texted back: “You know what, Helen?! Go find someone else.” I was annoyed by the nerve of this stranger, assuming they were trying to take advantage of me. I didn’t want anything to do with it, so I brushed it off and went about my day.

But just as I sent the message, something unexpected happened. I noticed my balance dropping. It wasn’t a lot, but $5 seemed to vanish from my account. I couldn’t figure out why until I realized that the text I had just sent was to a toll number, which meant I was being charged for it. My frustration grew as I realized I had just made a mistake.

It turned out that my response to Helen had cost me the very $5 I was so eager to keep. My attempt to dismiss the situation had backfired, and I felt both foolish and a bit annoyed at myself. I’d let my irritation with the initial message lead me into a costly mistake.

Looking back, I couldn’t help but laugh at the irony of the whole situation. Helen’s message may have been a mistake, but it was my own quick temper and rash response that ended up costing me. It was a lesson learned the hard way—one I wouldn’t soon forget.
