Subject: Am I the Bad Guy for Refusing to Go to My in-laws’ Christmas Dinner?

I need advice because I’m completely lost. My husband, Mark, and I eloped six months ago, knowing his mom, Susan, wouldn’t approve. She called it a disgrace, refused to speak to him, and even uninvited me from Thanksgiving. Mark didn’t defend me, saying, “It’s just Thanksgiving, you can spend it alone.” So, I did.

Then, on Thanksgiving, Mark called in a panic. Susan was having a meltdown, threatening to cancel the “big wedding” she’d been secretly planning unless I came. I was furious. “Mark, we eloped to avoid this! Why are you letting her control us?” He just sobbed, “She’s my mom. I can’t let her be upset.”

Now, I’m refusing to attend their Christmas dinner. I know I should be the “bigger person,” but I feel so hurt and betrayed. Am I wrong?
