{"id":8620,"date":"2024-04-20T18:54:55","date_gmt":"2024-04-20T16:54:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newzdiscover.com\/?p=8620"},"modified":"2024-04-20T18:54:55","modified_gmt":"2024-04-20T16:54:55","slug":"michigan-elementary-school-teaching-mini-lesson-on-pronouns-to-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newzdiscover.com\/?p=8620","title":{"rendered":"Michigan elementary school teaching \u2018mini-lesson\u2019 on pronouns to students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new \u201cmini-lesson\u201d for elementary school students in Michigan is sparking concern among some parents.<\/p>\n<p>The lesson on pronouns, meant to teach inclusivity, will be taught to first grade students at Schavey Road Elementary school in DeWitt, Michigan.<\/p>\n<p>On April 11 the district emailed a letter to parents alerting them of the upcoming lesson plan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to take the opportunity to update you regarding an optional mini-lesson we offered to students in one of our elementary school classrooms,\u201d the letter from Shanna Spickard the superintendent read. \u201cThe purpose is to promote greater understanding, compassion, and kindness regarding gender identity and the use of pronouns. The mini-lesson is not designed to challenge, persuade, or alter family beliefs. Instead, it aims to promote a safe and respectful learning environment where all our students feel valued.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lesson, which Spickard reiterated was \u201coptional\u201d and \u201c100% voluntary,\u201d came as the result of \u201cconcerns\u201d that had been brought to their attention.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newzdiscover.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/shutterstock_251933845-768x445-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"445\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8621\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newzdiscover.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/shutterstock_251933845-768x445-1.jpg 768w, https:\/\/newzdiscover.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/shutterstock_251933845-768x445-1-300x174.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><br \/>\nShutterstock<\/p>\n<p>Students in the first grade class will be listening to the book \u201cThey She He Me: Free to Be!\u201d and practice using they\/them pronouns. They will also participate in a discussion about using the correct pronouns and what to do if you use the wrong ones.<\/p>\n<p>Parents who wished to opt their child out of the lesson had until April 18 to respond.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newzdiscover.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/shutterstock_2280717437-768x514-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"514\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8622\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newzdiscover.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/shutterstock_2280717437-768x514-1.jpg 768w, https:\/\/newzdiscover.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/shutterstock_2280717437-768x514-1-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><br \/>\nShutterstock<\/p>\n<p>While some parents welcomed the mini-lesson, many have been against it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFive years old to seven years old to me, it blew me away,\u201d Brandi Strahan told WILX. \u201cThey don\u2019t need to learn, you know, about anything that\u2019s personal or sexualized or, you know, gender-specific, at five years old. Those are my babies; that\u2019s my right and my husband\u2019s right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It is worth noting that children are taught from an early age which bathroom to use based on their gender.<\/p>\n<p>According to a Facebook post, the Clinton County Republican Party is calling upon \u201cp*ssed off parents\u201d to attend the next DeWitt Board of Education meeting \u201cto take a stand against DeWitt\u2019s superintendent decision to indoctrinate our kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What do you think about this mini-lesson being offered to first graders?
