Renowned actor Michael Gambon, famous for his role as headmaster Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter film series, has passed away at the age of 82.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, his wife Lady Gambon and son Fergus Gambon issued a statement and confirmed the sad news.<\/p>\n

\u201cBeloved husband and father, Michael died peacefully in hospital with his wife Anne and son Fergus at his bedside, following a bout of pneumonia. Michael was 82.\u201d<\/p>\n

The statement continued, \u201cWe ask that you respect our privacy at this painful time and thank you for your messages of support and love.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sir Michael Gambon\u2019s portrayal of Albus Dumbledore left a lasting impact on the Harry Potter franchise and endeared him to fans around the world.<\/p>\n

Although he was born in Dublin, Ireland, Michael Gambon grew up in London, England. His family moved to London when he was six years old. He worked as a toolmaker before discovering his passion for acting.<\/p>\n

In 1962, he made his professional stage debut, and quickly after that, he established himself as a talented and versatile actor.<\/p>\n

Many of his fans discovered him quite late, when Gambon gained stardom for starring as Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter film series from 2004 to 2011, replacing the late Richard Harris.<\/p>\n

In 2007, he spoke about his role in Harry Potter and the role as Hogwarts\u2019 headmaster. He said that he didn\u2019t \u201chave to play anyone really. I just stick on a beard and play me, so it\u2019s no great feat. I never ease into a role \u2014 every part I play is just a variant of my own personality. I\u2019m not really a character actor at all.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to his iconic role as Dumbledore, Gambon appeared in a wide range of films, including Gosford Park, The Insider, The King\u2019s Speech, and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. He won four TV Baftas and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his services to drama. Besides being an actor, Gambon was a passionate collector and a qualified private pilot.<\/p>\n

According to his publicist, Michael Gambon passed away peacefully in a hospital, surrounded by his wife Anne and son Fergus, after battling pneumonia.<\/p>\n
