Martina\u2019s journey into extended breastfeeding hasn\u2019t been without its challenges. The mother of one recalls the initial discomfort she experienced during those early months. Still, something clicked, and she discovered a deep, emotional connection with her son that she couldn\u2019t ignore. It was a bond that brought not only convenience but also financial benefits.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had Winston in January 2020 and went into motherhood quite open-minded, I didn\u2019t mind if I breastfed or bottle fed,\u201d Martina shared. \u201cAs soon as he came out, he spent two hours suckling, which made me think: \u2018I\u2019m going to try and breastfeed.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

However, the road to extended breastfeeding wasn\u2019t always smooth. Negative comments started pouring in when Winston was around 18 months old. Friends and family, initially supportive, began expressing their reservations about Martina\u2019s choice to breastfeed in public. Martina refused to hide her decision, wondering why she shouldn\u2019t share this essential aspect of motherhood.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy should I not tell people? It\u2019s my decision,\u201d Martina declared. \u201cPeople feel like it\u2019s a taboo subject and it\u2019s not normal. People don\u2019t talk about it and shy away from it, and I think that\u2019s wrong. I\u2019m not scared to be open about feeding my toddler.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite the criticism and pressure to conform, Martina remains steadfast in her decision. Her primary motivation is not to provide milk to her son but to nourish the unique bond they share. Winston, who feeds three to six times a day, finds comfort in this routine that has been a part of his life since birth.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven though I feed him now, it\u2019s not for the milk; it\u2019s for the comfort. That\u2019s all he\u2019s known his whole life,\u201d Martina explained. \u201cI felt like I had a trump card to fix any situation. We\u2019d be at a toddler group, and other kids would be having meltdowns, but I could just give him some milk, and he\u2019d be absolutely fine.\u201d<\/p>\n

Martina\u2019s journey may continue for some time, with no immediate plans to stop. However, she recognizes that as Winston starts school and spends more time away from her, their breastfeeding routine may naturally evolve.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously, when he\u2019s at school, he\u2019ll be away from me all day, so we\u2019ll probably just feed in the morning and at bedtime, and it\u2019ll slowly decrease,\u201d Martina anticipates. \u201cI didn\u2019t think I\u2019d still be feeding now; I\u2019ve just been really open-minded and gone with the flow.\u201d<\/p>\n

Through her candid story, Martina hopes to inspire and support other mothers who may be considering extended breastfeeding but fear societal judgment. She emphasizes that every mother makes choices that they believe are best for their children, and these choices should be respected, not condemned.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted people to know it\u2019s normal to feed your child up until you want to stop feeding or your child wants to stop,\u201d Martina declared. \u201cIf there\u2019s one thing I\u2019ve learned from being a mum, don\u2019t judge another mum by their parenting decisions. Everyone\u2019s just doing the best they can to survive each day.\u201d<\/p>\n
