After what seemed like an eternity of nonstop turmoil, Liam and I had finally managed to carve out a little space for ourselves. Due to the fact that our seventh wedding anniversary was approaching, we were in desperate need of a getaway.<\/p>\n
Raising three active children, working full-time jobs, and most recently living with his mother, Judith, when a fire destroyed our kitchen\u2026 all of these things had taken their toll on him physically and emotionally. As a result, we did not hesitate to take advantage of the opportunity to go on a holiday to Maui for a week.<\/p>\n
There are no children. There are no requirements. There are no in-laws.<\/p>\n
Just Liam and I, how it used to be when we were together.<\/p>\n
Are you referring to the first three days?<\/p>\n
Unquestionably a heaven.<\/p>\n
We slept in late. Drinking coffee on our own terrace with a view of the beach was a relaxing activity. Under the warm rays of the sun, we sipped delicious drinks and strolled hand in hand along the shoreline illuminated by the moon. The sensation of falling in love all over again was evoked by each and every kiss.<\/p>\n

As I looked at her, I felt as if she had sprouted three heads. It was almost as if Liam choked on his drink.<\/p>\n
As he sat completely upright, he said, \u201cMom?\u201d \u201cWhat\u2026 if you\u2019re here, what are you doing?!\u201d<\/p>\n
She immediately removed her sandals, sat down on a lounger as if she were the owner of the resort, and stretched out her muscles while heaving a sigh.<\/p>\n
\u201cA choice made at the eleventh hour! Seeing as how the two of you are in love, I thought it would be nice to have some sunlight and some familiar company. Furthermore, I was in need of a vacation as well.<\/p>\n
I blinked my eyes.<\/p>\n
Would you believe that this lady, who had suggested that we go on the vacation to reconnect with each other, had left our children with a friend of hers and then followed us halfway across the Pacific Ocean?<\/p>\n
With a quiet voice, I inquired of Judith, \u201cWhere are the children?\u201d<\/p>\n
Oh, they are with Cathy, who is a friend of mine. Her absence has been felt! It is flawless.\u201d<\/p>\n
I switched my attention to Liam. He gave off the impression that someone had disconnected his brain. Very light. Flex your jaw. I was in a panic.<\/p>\n
I sat down and put my drink down. To what end are you going to respond to this situation?<\/p>\n
He let out a breath as he ran his palm over his face. Oh, darling, she has already arrived\u2026 What are our options? I\u2019m going to speak to her.<\/p>\n
He stood up to get her something to drink.<\/p>\n
And just like that, our romantic getaway transformed into a spectacle involving three people.<\/p>\n
Without wasting a single second, Judith took immediate action to make her presence known. It was difficult for her to maintain her equilibrium since she sat too close, disrupted every discussion, and somehow warped every moment.<\/p>\n
At one time, when Liam was out getting towels for us, she came up close to us and said, \u201cYou do know that you haven\u2019t replaced me in Liam\u2019s life, right? Still, he pays attention to what I have to say. Continually \u201chas\u201d<\/p>\n
In spite of the fact that her tone was sugary-sweet, it was clear that there was poison underlying it.<\/p>\n

The tone of my speech was icy and low. Every conceivable boundary had been breached by Judith.<\/p>\n

There was no sleep for me that night. I lay awake, gazing at the ceiling, and my irritation was building to a boiling point.<\/p>\n
I had a plan by the time the sun rose.<\/p>\n
I sneaked into the restroom, shut the door, and then decided to make a phone call.<\/p>\n

\u201cHello,\u201d I hushed myself. I need your most strenuous, grueling, and jam-packed tour that lasts for a whole day. I do not agree. On behalf of my mother-in-law.\u201d<\/p>\n
When she was on the phone, the lady laughed. The phrase \u201cwe\u2019ve got just the thing\u201d<\/p>\n
Our room received the itinerary that she had supplied. Simply filling out Judith\u2019s information and checking a box to affirm that she was in \u201cadequate health\u201d was all that was required of me. It was never enough for her to quit boasting about her \u201cperfect blood pressure\u201d \u2013 she would be just fine.<\/p>\n
Judith came to our house the next morning at precisely seven o\u2019clock, drenched in perspiration and holding a piece of paper in her hand.<\/p>\n
\u201cHave you\u2026 have you signed me up for something of any kind?\u201d She let out a croak. It seems that I omitted\u2026 an outing?\u201d<\/p>\n
Hand to chest, I let out a gasp. \u201cOh my goodness! Have you made the mistake of checking the box that says \u201cadventure itinerary\u201d when you checked in? Wow, it is really strange!<\/p>\n
Liam wore a frown. \u201cAre you suggesting that we call it off?\u201d<\/p>\n
She paused for a moment. I was able to see the conflict that was going on inside of her.<\/p>\n
Give in to defeat? Alternatively, continue to act as if she were the indomitable matriarch.<\/p>\n
Although she was still shaky, she straightened up. \u201cNo\u2026 I\u2019m going to leave. I do not want to throw away this wonderful chance.<\/p>\n

At six o\u2019clock in the morning, take a journey across the difficult volcanic landscape for ten miles, with one water break.<\/p>\n
9:00 AM: Trekking over the lava field, with no shade and full sun.<\/p>\n
The Hula dance lesson will begin at twelve o\u2019clock, and participants are required to participate in the class as a group.<\/p>\n
The Hawaiian cooking lesson will begin at three o\u2019clock in the afternoon, and it will take three hours to prepare.<\/p>\n
Night safari through the pathways of the deep jungle begins around six o\u2019clock.<\/p>\n

She departed.<\/p>\n
That evening, she returned to the resort in a manner that was reminiscent of a lady who had been through a war. A sunburn had appeared on her skin, her hair was a knotted mess, and her voice was scratchy.<\/p>\n
