Unanticipated voices speak out for her when she has an outburst in the middle of the night that disrupts the peace. After all has been said and done, Lila is forced to confront the reality of love, family, and what it truly means to feel secure… for both herself and her kid.

At the moment, my brain is still spinning with all that has occurred over the previous few days, despite the fact that I am 27 years old and 39 weeks pregnant.

Permit me to take a step back.

I spent my childhood in foster care. I am not aware of any siblings or other relatives. When things became too difficult or gloomy, there were no parents to call.

I spent the most of my youth as the girl who was responsible for transporting her own documents from school to school, packed everything in plastic bags.

I was taught at a young age to be quiet, to smile when I was terrified, and to make myself tiny in a world that did not make place for me.

In other words, when I first met Finn, it was like starting again.

The sort of person that everyone loved, he was thirty years old and pleasant. He exuded self-assurance and was certain of himself, but most importantly, he had something that I had never had: a family.

A large, friendly, and boisterous family.

The very first time we met, his mother, Nora, gave me a hug and brought a pie that she had baked herself. When I was at my modest rental property, his father, Theo, urged me to address him by his name and replaced the porch light without my asking him to do so.

“Love, you can call me Theo,” he murmured to her. “Lila.” There is no need for official anything since we are family.

It felt as if I had been given a house that I had never even dared to imagine having.

I said to myself, “Lila, perhaps this is the end of the road.” “Perhaps this is how it sounds when you are safe.”

It has been two years since Finn and I tied the knot. Things seemed to be going well back then. I would say that he was not ideal since he had the tendency to be dictatorial and occasionally caustic when things did not go his way, but he would laugh it off as being honest.

With a smirk on his face, he would remark, “I don’t sugarcoat, love.” I am familiar to you, Lila. I am not afraid to say it how it is!

Neither of us argued. I had spent my whole life attempting to win a place in people’s lives by avoiding arguments and avoiding conflict. I did not want to throw away what I had at long last discovered.

Everything changed when I found out I was pregnant. There was no suddenness; rather, it was gradual and covert.

The first thing that stood out was his tone. When he saw that his workout clothes were dirty, he would groan as if I had wasted his day. If he was not satisfied with the meal, he would look at it for a moment before removing the dish from his table.

“You left out the sauce,” he would comment in a chilly tone. Once more. Sincerely, Lila, what exactly is the matter with you? I had higher expectations.”

I would make excuses for him, saying that perhaps he was anxious about becoming a father, or that this was his way of dealing with stress. However, the reasons became less convincing with each passing week. Soon, I was unable to take a sleep without him grumbling something about being lazy. He would remake the towels in front of me if I folded them in the manner that I do.

Once upon a time, he said, “I’m not trying to nag.” “But is it really that difficult to get it right?”

I reassured myself that it was just a temporary situation. I was thinking that after the baby arrived, he would become more lenient and that he would be nice once again.

My husband’s parents arrived to see me three days ago.

Soup, cookies, vitamins, and warm socks were all what Nora brought with her. Theo sent me a text message inquiring about the snacks I wanted and whether or not I had sufficient pillows.

My granddaughter is being carried by my girl! Whatever it is that you need, love, just let us know.

So that they could be present for the birth, they traveled from two counties away. I felt a sense of relief. Having them in the home made me feel protected, as if they were a barrier between me and the Finn that I failed to recognize anymore.

During our time together, I had never disclosed to them how Finn communicated with me. As a matter of fact, I was at a loss for words.

On the other hand, my feelings began to surface as Theo entered the living room carrying a piece of chocolate cake.

“My family and I are so proud of you, Lila,” he continued. “Love, you are doing an excellent job.”

There on the sofa, I came dangerously close to crying. I had never been one to be noticed before.

Then, the previous evening arrived.

It was a terrible day for me. Despite the fact that my back was hurting deep inside, my tummy felt tight, and it looked as if the baby had slid lower. It was the type of pain that crept in gradually and made walking difficult.

After preparing a simple spaghetti meal, I scrubbed the dishes and went to bed at an earlier hour. Just get it through tonight, I thought to myself…

I slid onto my side, felt a powerful kick, grinned, and closed my eyes. He continued to kick me.

After then, I became aware of it.

Do you know why my clothing isn’t folded? A Lila?! In addition, I made it clear that I needed to have a black dress shirt pressed for tomorrow. Get up and get it done right now! Finn roared, his voice resonating with the force of a smack.

“What is it? What exactly is going on? I was perplexed and blinked.

“I told you to get up,” he said, his face in close proximity to me. ‘Lila, you have been sleeping the whole day right? I go to work, and when I get home, I find that I have accomplished nothing?

I gently sat up there. As a result of the baby’s weight pressing me forward, my back began to hurt. There was no argument or defense on my part. I recently relocated. I moved to the laundry basket while standing barefoot and experiencing a lot of pain.

All of my fingers were hovering over the garments.

My idea was to just fold it. Not only should you fold it quickly, but you should also iron his shirt.

I then became aware of footsteps.

Theo spoke out in a loud voice, “Sit down, Lila.” “This moment.”

I became numb.

My turn was quite sluggish.

While standing at the doorway, Theo seemed to be prepared for a fight. His jaw was clenched and his arms were crossed, but his voice remained unwavering.

He yelled out something to the effect of, “Are you serious, talking to your pregnant wife like that?!” What are you, Finn? Who do you think you are?

As he opened his lips, Finn’s face had begun to flush.

He began out by saying, “Dad, this is my house,” with a protective tone.

Theo responded with a more resolute “No.”

When he entered the room, his gaze was immediately drawn to his kid.

He told her, “You do not have the right to say that tonight.” It’s a shame that you’re folding your own clothes. Your wife is now taking a break. Is that your mother and I? We will remain here till the arrival of the baby. It is very evident that you need a refresher on the proper way to interact with a person, particularly the lady who is carrying your kid.

A hush fell over the room. Despite the fact that my legs were shaking, I sat back on the bed with one hand on my stomach and the other hand across my lips.

I didn’t know I was sobbing until my chest tightened up and I started crying at the same time.

Despite the fact that Theo’s voice remained calm, his dissatisfaction was more audible than any shout.

With her arms crossed and her gaze fixed on her kid, Nora materialized at the doorway.

It was a whisper that she whispered, “Finn, this is not okay.” “You haven’t seen me in quite some time.”

Finn’s cheeks flushed a deep crimson, indicating his anger. His footsteps were loud as they walked down the hallway. He grabbed the laundry basket, shouted something that I was unable to hear, and then rushed out of the house.

When Nora returned, she brought a cup of hot chamomile tea with her. She did not talk at first; instead, she just placed the cup on the nightstand and sat next to me as if it were nothing out of the ordinary.

After drawing the desk chair closer to him, Theo sat down and let out a soft sigh.

When he looked at me, his voice was soft and he murmured, “Love.” “I absolutely have no idea what is going on with my kid… Nevertheless, you did not commit any errors. Have you heard me?

I shuddered my lips and nodded.

What he said was, “You are family.” We are not going to allow you to go through this by yourself. We guarantee it.”

It was a sincere message.

On the next morning, Finn was hardly audible. As he went about the house like a shadow, he kept his silence as he moved around. As if they had been waiting to take over, his parents seized control of the situation.

Nora was in charge of the kitchen, and she was humming as she prepared bread and eggs.

During the time that I was sitting on the sofa with one hand on my stomach and drinking a cup of tea, Theo was vacuuming and dusting the living room.

In spite of the fact that he was clearly resentful, Finn went about his chores by ironing the clothes, cleaning the bathtub, and going to the grocery store.

A conversation between Theo and him was overheard by me in the hallway that afternoon. They were unaware that I was eavesdropping on the other side of the bedroom door while holding my breath.

“This is not about laundry, Finn,” Theo stated in a tone that was low but unequivocal. This is about maturing into an adult. Maintaining a moral character. Is it true that you are the only person who is stressed? Despite the fact that she is carrying your kid and keeping this home running, you are yelling at her as if she were your maid.

There is a pause. My mental image was of Finn crossing his arms.

According to Theo, “You yelled at her as if she didn’t matter,” he said. It’s almost as if she doesn’t even try. That is all over now. We will assist her in raising the child without you if you do not put an end to this situation and if you do not become the kind of guy she needs.

A response was not heard by me. There is just quiet.

On that particular evening, I was in the living room watching Finn fold a basket of onesie garments. He did not raise his head. She sat next to me and rubbed my swollen feet while she did so. My water glass was being replenished by Theo.

A hushed voice said, “I am at a loss for what to do.”

With a quiet voice, Nora said, “You do not need to know yet.” “Just take a break. Have a sense of security…

I gave a little nod.

I am unsure of what decision I will choose in the long run. I am unsure as to whether this is a time of embarrassment for Finn or if it is a turning point for him. What I do know, however, is that I had a sense of being noticed for the very first time in a very long time.

Safe and sound. You are not alone.

That is sufficient for the time being.

I went to the kitchen that night to get some water after everyone else had gone to bed in the evening. I was able to hear the sound of an ancient home as the hall groaned under me.

Theodore was present, leaning against the counter and drinking tea from a mug that had been broken.

“Couldn’t sleep either?” he said in a subtle manner.

I offered a grin and said, “Your grandchild is kicking nonstop.” It’s very near to us… Although I am thrilled, I am also… terrified.

Through a grin, he said, “That’s a good sign.” “The kicks, as well as the fear ” That is very typical. Even before Finn was born, I had the same feeling. For me, the feelings were a roller coaster ride, but Nora was the one who put in the effort.

The refrigerator was humming in the background as we sat silently.

After a while, he said, “You know,” when he was pouring me some milk. During the time that Nora was carrying Finn, we went through a difficult period together.

I was taken aback and glanced up.

“Lila, remember that I wasn’t always like this. For me, putting in a lot of effort and paying the bills was plenty. But your body moves, your patience grows thin, and your whole being undergoes a transformation… and what happens if your spouse does not go through it with you? It’s a solitary experience.”

I managed to force myself to swallow as I responded, “That is exactly how it feels.”

“But I learned,” he told me with a nod. “I had no choice. I came very close to losing her. The time has come for Nora’s parents to bring her back to their house and raise the child alongside her. It was at that moment that I realized I needed to take charge.

A few tears escaped my eyes.

“Just because you married Finn does not change the fact that you owe him forgiveness,” Theo stated. However, if you ever decide to rebuild, we will be here to help you. If you don’t, what then?” He made a place for his cup. “We will be present. We will be there for you in every manner that we can.

I was unable to talk. I nodded, feeling appreciative in a manner that I was unable to articulate.

There was no crying on my part when I went back to bed.

I experienced completeness.

At the 39th week of her pregnancy, Lila is exhausted, in pain, and making a concerted effort to maintain harmony in a house that is gradually becoming colder.
