Instead, it became a breaking point that broke the image of family peace and left me doubting my position in my own house. I was left wondering where I fit in.

During the time when I was meeting Torin, I had just graduated from graduate school and was exhausted from working on architectural projects and eating ramen meals. I had no idea at the time that this guy would always have my back, even if it meant going against his own family. I was completely unaware of this knowledge.

While I was working at the company as a junior architect, my future husband was just beginning his career as the new marketing man. At the time, I was working there. The term “unattractive” was used to describe Torin by a few individuals. In addition to having a crooked grin and a propensity of wearing socks that did not match, he was a little bit clumsy.

In addition, Torin stood out since he arrived at the office that day wearing a suit that was two sizes too large for him. I was unable to contain my laughter!

He’d become a bright crimson. “I needed to borrow my father’s suit because it was laundry day.”

“It is obvious,” I said.

So that was it; from that point on, we were inseparable.

The relationship between Torin and I lasted for four years, and we tied the knot two years after the birth of our daughter, Zinnia. She was the one who brought us down to earth and made our dream seem like it was really happening.

Torin and I have always had the desire of settling down near the water, and that ideal has never changed. The lifestyle of a yacht club is not what I am referring about here. During the mornings, we wanted to be surrounded by sea air and coffee, and during the afternoons, we wanted your hair to smell like salt. This was the sort of life that we wanted to live.

We thought that it would be the ideal environment for Zinnia to grow up in, where she could be barefoot and inquisitive.

However, everyone was opposed to the proposal, and they advised us not to do it.

He was cautioned by his mother, “It is too far from family.” In addition, his father said, “You’ll come to regret isolating yourselves.” For every relative who had an opinion, the question “But what about holidays?” was posed.

However, we failed to care. We were cognizant of the things that we desired for ourselves and our little family.

We spent a lot of effort to make our goal come true. A number of sacrifices were made by us, including foregoing holidays, dining at home, and accepting as many freelancing jobs as we could. Finally, after almost seven years of accumulating money and making plans, we were able to purchase a quaint small home that was located three streets away from the coast.

The location was in need of some improvement, but it was ours. In spite of its peeling paint and promise, the cottage was a modest white structure.

Through sanding every beam and painting every wall, Torin and I were able to transform it into a home. We put our whole selves into it.

When it happened, the guests began to arrive.

It had a pleasant taste at first. Vesper and Elton, Torin’s parents, visited their daughter on the weekends. I created guest beds, crab dip, and playlists for beach bonfires while his sister, Saffron, came her twins. I also made the beds for the guests.

On the other hand, the duration of the stays increased, and the frequency of the visits increased. Then followed the assertions that were made on a whim.

One morning, when Elton was standing by the kitchen window with a cup of coffee in his hand, he said, “This view is superior to ours any day.” I may be able to adjust to this.”

While I was laughing uncomfortably, I made a statement that would eventually come back to haunt me. In such case, you need to come more often.

He gave a smirk. The response was, “Oh, we will.”

Vesper, who was in the dining room, interjected here. “I advised him that we need to simply move in instead. You have the room to go about.”

I blinked my eyes. “Well, not really, I mean, Zinnia’s room is already cramped and—” The speaker said.

I was interrupted by her. Do not act like a fool. Family is the most important thing, and we are not strangers.

They arrived without prior notice the next time they came.

Elton was holding a fishing rod when they drove into the driveway, and Vesper was carrying food bags as if she were refilling her own pantry. They seemed to be in possession of the driveway.

While we were in the garage, Torin took me aside. “Yes, I am aware of it. In the event that this continues to occur, I will take action.

“It’s already happening,” I said over my shoulder. “We had no idea that they were going to show up there.”

“I’ll have a conversation with them. Sorry, but not today. For the twins, this weekend is their birthday.

The “talk” never took place, and the situation continued to deteriorate.

I received a text message from Saffron in which she asked, “What should we bring for Easter brunch at your place?” it was as if the decision had already been made.

Have you made plans for Easter? That night, I inquired of Torin it.

He made a shrugs. “What I mean is that we did it the year before, as well as the year before that.”

So, it’s simply here at this point? At all times?

He was hesitant. “This house is a hit with them, and you are an excellent host,” she said.

It seemed as if I was giving way. “I did not sign up to be the manager of the family resort,” she said.

However, the pattern remained. Thanksgiving Day? to us as the default. Is it Christmas? I received a text message from Saffron at the beginning of November wondering whether we were going to do matching pajamas once again. Vesper started referring to our guest room as “hers at first!”

It was during the summer of the previous year when Elton contacted Torin and informed her that they would be coming down for a week. I really hope that’s okay.

He was informed by my spouse that “We’ve got a lot going on, Dad.” Even though Zinnia is working on a school assignment, the guest room is not yet complete.

His father took a chuckle. “We will make do with what we have. Vesper is enthusiastic. “She claims that she sleeps better when she is near the ocean air.”

The moment I became aware of the call, I finally lost my temper.

Beloved, they do not inquire; rather, they just proclaim. Do not consider us to be their vacation property!

His temples were stroked by him. “You are absolutely correct. No, I’m sorry. I’ll be the one to draw the line.”

However, he did not, and that particular sentence was repeatedly changed, rewritten again, and deleted several times.

Regrettably, my own family was not there to provide support for me. While I was attending college, both of my parents were killed in a vehicle accident. My cousins lived in Canada, but we were not very close. At the time, I was the only child in my family. And although Torin’s family was always around and boisterous, I was the one who was continually biting my tongue in my own house during the whole time.

The next weekend, Vesper celebrated her birthday.

I should have been able to anticipate it.

I received a phone call from my mother-in-law, who expressed her want to celebrate with “just close family.” In the end, it amounted to eleven individuals. I had a limited acquaintance with two of her aunts, namely Elton and Saffron, as well as her two children and Thane, her current partner. Moreover, Thane brought his very own bottle of gin and inquired as to whether or not we have “fancy tonic.”

In addition to preparing meals for two days, I also painted the home with gold and seafoam green. Zinnia, who is now nine years old, created a lovely banner using glitter glue that included the message, “Happy Birthday, Nana!”

This was meant to be a day filled with joy.

The whole family of my spouse visited us on that particular Sunday. The meal was already prepared when they arrived, and everyone stuffed their plates with food. At long last, I took a seat and ate a single piece of the salad.

Elton then stepped up with his wine glass elevated.

“Thank you to my wonderful wife, who made the reservation for us to spend two weeks on vacation in this stunning beach house!”

There was a wave of applause that had a puzzled tone. A flush appeared on Vesper’s face as she waved him off as if he were simply being ridiculous.

The thought that I had misheard caused me to freeze, and then I gazed at Torin, who was merely blinking in disbelief. After that, I turned to Elton and gave him a nervous chuckle.

“I’m sorry… holiday spot for you?”

When I glanced at my father-in-law, his demeanor darkened like a storm that was approaching, and he stared at me as if I were an idiot. You are deaf, right? Here we are. Wow, this mansion!

I blinked my eyes. “However… this will be our home. You can’t simply hang around here for a fortnight, can you?

A hush descended over the room. The air had the sensation of being on the verge of melting.

The tone of Elton’s voice became acrid and poisonous.

“Keep your mouth shut! There is no one else here! I’ll see to it that I say it!

The fork that Zinnia was using fell to the ground with a clatter. I could feel my hands trembling. I attempted to speak, but nothing came out of my lips.

My gaze then turned to Torin, whose expression was impenetrable. The beat of my heart was rapid. It was in my brain that I said the words, “Please, please say something.”

He had stood up.

Even though his voice was not very loud, it struck like a hammer.

“Dad,” he assured his father, “you will not speak to my wife in such a manner.” Not inside this residence. Never, ever again…”

Nobody moved at all.

After that, he said, “I’m embarrassed.” I am embarrassed by the fact that you believe you can just claim this to be your holiday home. Have we even been asked about it?

Saffron was fixated on the table, Vesper refused to look him in the eye, and one of the aunts moved slightly in her seat from time to time.

Torin consulted with his mother again.

“Mom? ” Who informed you that this was acceptable?

The sound of Vesper’s voice was less than a whisper. To be honest, I merely made a guess. I informed your father that everything had already been taken care of.”

He let out a strong exhalation. “I am to blame for the fact that I have never put an end to this. It seemed to me that we were being charitable, but it seems that you are all taking advantage of it. I want to make this very clear. It is my expectation that everyone will get ready to depart after supper. We will not be hosting anybody for the next half year, so please do not come. Maybe for a longer period of time.”

I have broken!

My cheeks were filled with tears, yet they were not tears of grief but tears of relief. Deep, trembling relief was felt.

After taking a seat next to me once again, he attempted to grab my hand from under the table. I felt his thumb lightly brush across my palm.

The only person who counts in this situation is you. “By the way, I’m sorry,” he mumbled.

All was quiet in the room. The waves in the distance were the only sounds that could be heard, along with the odd clink of cutlery.

The children of Saffron inquired as to whether or not they might eat their pie before packing. Vesper’s sister, who was one of the aunts, mumbled something about “respecting your elders,” while another aunt mumbled something about “family values.” On the other hand, their attempts to manipulate did not succeed. This time, not at all.

As dinner came to an abrupt end. They packed their belongings in a methodical manner, one by one.

Elton did not communicate with me once again. Despite Vesper’s attempt to give me a short embrace, I remained still.

When the clock struck eight o’clock, the home was once again peaceful. Ours once again.

I was sitting on the porch with Torin, and we were both silent. The sky was painted orange and purple.

“I’m sorry that it took this long,” he remarked out loud.

“I was there,” I said to myself. “I was actually seen.”

He indicated with a nod. “Before and after. I just failed to remember to stand out for both you and us.

After coming out of her pyjamas, Zinnia climbed up into our laps and said, “Would it be possible for us to celebrate your birthday here the next time?” Only the two of us?”

Through my tears, I managed to grin. “You do, sweetie.
