Most people didn\u2019t know Derek Ryder\u2019s mother. Derek froze as friends discussed their parents. He never invited his friends around for video games or movies.<\/p>\n
From elementary school to his final year in high school, no one entered Derek\u2019s residence. He lied to avoid introducing a lady by saying, \u201cLook, babe, my mother is funny religious, she won\u2019t let me date\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\nGail never returned to school. She drove away after dropping Derek off, tears streaming down her right cheek. She felt terrible when her son was humiliated of her.<\/p>\n
Derek was OK as long as Gail stayed out of his public life\u2014he pretended she was a recluse, religious zealot, or anything else to hide the truth.<\/p>\n
Derek was in a bind at graduation. He received a pat on the back from the headmaster as valedictorian. He said, \u201cWell, my man, I hope we finally meet your mother!\u201d \u201cI congratulate her personally!\u201d<\/p>\n
His mother? His mother couldn\u2019t attend graduation with Derek! All would know! What could he do? That night, he hired an actress from a character actor agency.<\/p>\n
His choice was the perfect representation of his dream mother. Beautiful, compassionate, scarless. Derek meticulously advised the woman on how to dress and speak and had his pseudo-mom pick him up from home.<\/p>\n
Gail gasped at Derek\u2019s graduation cape. \u201cDerek! Is it today? Give me time to dress!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cDressed? For what? Derek asked.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy, honey, your graduation!\u201d Gail reply.<\/p>\n
You\u2019re not going! Derek told her coldly. Do you think I want you on my most significant day, exposing your ugly face? I\u2019ve spent my life hiding you.<\/p>\n
One eye of Gail cried. \u201cDerek,\u201d she whispered. \u201cWhy are you so cruel?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cMom, you\u2019re a freak, OK?\u201d Derek yelled. \u201cYou\u2019ve always shamed me. Do you understand that I hired someone to replace you?<\/p>\n
Gail was deathly pale. She nods. \u201cOh my son,\u201d she whispered. I apologize\u2026 Derek had turned his back and left. Two weeks later, he left home for California college.<\/p>\n
Derek never contact his mother again, but ten years later, he learned she died. Her friends planned the funeral, but she left Derek her house and a large estate.<\/p>\n
A large estate? Derek was amazed. He knew his mother had sent monthly checks and notes Derek never read to pay for college, but he never thought there would be much.<\/p>\n
Derek flew home to see his mother\u2019s lawyer, Terry Arlington. According to Mr. Ryder, his mother left him over $700,000 and the house, which is estimated to be worth over $1.5 million.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut\u2026 Don\u2019t comprehend! My mother led a simple life. I think my father left her with nothing. Derek exclaimed.<\/p>\n
Arlington: \u201cIt was the insurance, and the compensation, of course. Surely you know about those?<\/p>\n
\u201cNo!\u201d Bewildered, Derek said. \u201cWhat are you discussing?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cMr. Ryder, you approached a strange dog in the park when you were three. Arlington said your mother jumped between you and the beast when she noticed it. \u201cShe was viciously mauled, blinded, and scarred for life.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBut\u2026 \u201cIt would have been me,\u201d Derek said, tears in his eyes.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve always considered your mother one of the bravest and most selfless people I\u2019ve ever known, Mr. Ryder, a true hero,\u201d Arlington stated gently. \u201cYou must have been proud of her.\u201d<\/p>\n
Derek left the lawyer\u2019s final words stuck in his head. He went to the cemetery, discovered his mother\u2019s grave, and knelt, crying.<\/p>\n
\u201cOh mom,\u201d he whispered. I was harsh to you after you saved me. Please forgive me, mom.<\/p>\n
Derek determined to never disguise his history after that. He placed one of his mom\u2019s few photos with her big glasses on his desk to disguise the scars.<\/p>\n
Every time he saw it, he remembered her sacrifice and generosity and his selfishness and cruelty.<\/p>\n
