But for me, it was when I realized I hadn\u2019t heard my own name spoken in two weeks. Not once.<\/p>\n
Except by him\u2014my dog, Bixby.
\nWell, not in words, obviously.
\nBut in the way he looked at me every morning like I still mattered.
\nLike I was still his person, no matter what.<\/p>\n
We\u2019ve been through it all\u2014eviction, shelters turning us away because of \u201cno pets,\u201d nights curled up in alleys with just a tarp and each other. He never bolted. Never stopped wagging that little crooked tail when I came back with even half a sandwich.<\/p>\n
One time, I hadn\u2019t eaten in two days. Someone tossed us a sausage biscuit from a car window.
\nI split it right down the middle, but Bixby wouldn\u2019t touch his half.
\nJust pushed it toward me with his nose.
\nSat there staring like, \u201cI can wait. You eat.\u201d<\/p>\n
That broke me.<\/p>\n
I started writing the sign not to beg, but just to explain. Because people don\u2019t always get it.
\nThey see the dirt, the beard, the worn-out hoodie.
\nBut they don\u2019t see him. Or what he\u2019s done for me.<\/p>\n
And then last week\u2014just as I was packing up to move spots\u2014this woman in scrubs stopped in front of us.<\/p>\n
She looked at Bixby, then at me, and said five words that didn\u2019t feel real at first:<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve been looking for you.\u201d<\/p>\n
I thought she had the wrong person. But then she pulled a photo from her bag\u2014me and Bixby, blurry, taken from a distance. A social worker had snapped it weeks earlier and sent it to a local outreach team that partners with animal clinics and transitional housing.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m Jen,\u201d she said. \u201cWe have a room. Dog-friendly. You interested?\u201d<\/p>\n
I didn\u2019t even answer at first. Just stared.
\nDog-friendly?
\nA bed and Bixby?
\nI\u2019d been told \u201cno\u201d so many times I forgot what yes even felt like.<\/p>\n
She must\u2019ve seen the hesitation in my eyes because she crouched down, scratched Bixby behind the ears, and said,
\n\u201cYou kept him warm. Let us do the same for you.\u201d<\/p>\n
That was five days ago.<\/p>\n
We now have a small room at a halfway home. Nothing fancy. Just a bed, a mini fridge, a shared bathroom.
\nBut it\u2019s warm.
\nIt\u2019s safe.
\nAnd it\u2019s ours.<\/p>\n
They gave Bixby a bath the first night. A vet check. Even a new squeaky toy he immediately buried under the pillow like some priceless treasure.
\nThey gave me a meal, a fresh pair of clothes, and a phone to call my sister.
\nFirst conversation in over a year.<\/p>\n
Yesterday, Jen came by and handed me a form.
\nPart-time work. Warehouse nearby. No experience needed. Weekly pay. She said it\u2019s mine if I want it.<\/p>\n
I do.
\nNot just for me.
\nFor us.<\/p>\n
Because Bixby didn\u2019t ask for any of this\u2014but he stayed. Through everything.<\/p>\n
