At first, I ignored it. However, seeing his location again cast suspicion on him. Was there another? Wanting the truth, I followed him. But what I found when the door opened surprised me.

I gazed at my phone’s blinking dot, motionless. Caleb returned to that residence.

The marriage is 18 years old. Eighteen years of trust, laughter, difficulties, and love. I always thought Caleb and I were solid. We built a home, raised kids, and survived life’s storms.

But recently, something changed. The man was remote. Distracted.

After his income dropped, he worked late delivery shifts to make up the difference.

At first, I respected his dedication. But then I noticed a pattern.

As I watched TV one night, I casually checked his location. We established this modest habit for convenience over time. He was at an unusual address. I ignored it. At least he was working.

And then it happened again. Once again. He stopped at the same house every late workday.

At first, I ignored it. Doubt grew as the pattern continued.

My anxiousness grew like a hurricane for weeks. Why was he there so long for a delivery? What needs so many visits?

Worse thoughts filled my head. Was he cheating? Was there a second family? I attempted to justify it, but doubt gnawed at me like a hungry animal.

It got too much for me.

When I saw him stop at the house again the next night, I grabbed my keys and drove.

I held the wheel so fiercely my knuckles turned white. As I came closer, my gut knotted and my heart pounded like it wanted to escape.

After stopping in front of the house, I stared at it for a while.

The modest but well-kept residence had warm light from curtained windows. A home. Not the seedy motel I expected.

I couldn’t turn back. I forced myself out of the car and towards the door. All my steps felt like molasses.

I knocked. A few seconds passed without action. Door creaked open.

2 tiny kids stood there.

My body stiffened. My heart nearly stopped.

They were kids, maybe five or six, wide-eyed and innocent. A frightening idea hit me: Oh God. Are they his other family?

Before I could respond, a 16-year-old boy stepped forward.

“Can I help you?” He inquired, protecting each tiny child’s shoulder.

My voice shook. Needed to inquire. My hubby. Caleb. He comes here.”

Before the boy could respond, I spotted him.

Caleb left the kitchen with a dish. His color faded when he looked at me.

“Emily?” His voice strained.

I looked for guilt or shame in his face, but just saw amazement.

“Why are you here?” Voice wavered, almost breaking. I spoke with a burning throat. You always end up at this place when you work late. Was watching for weeks. Tell me straight. What’s happening?

He shakily breathed and looked at me.

“Not in front of the kids,” he whispered. Turning to the teen boy. Can Jake take Mia and Tyler to finish their dinner in the kitchen?

Jake nodded, suspiciously eyeing my face, then led the kids away.

Caleb pointed to the living room after they left. “Please enter.”

My legs shook as I entered.

Simple but neat, the house has weathered furniture and children’s doodles on the walls. No Caleb pics. No visible secret life. Nevertheless…

He began with a quiet voice, “Em…”. “Not what you think.”

I crossed my chest. Then explain.”

He moaned and scratched his neck.

I gave birth here a few weeks ago. I knocked, and the two kids answered. I saw no adults.”

My wrath faded into uncertainty.

My second visit, I asked where their parents were. Jake told me what was happening.”

His glance relaxed toward the kitchen. They reside with their mother. No dad. To feed herself, she works 18-hour hospital shifts. She seldom sees them at home. They spend most nights alone.”

I got a throat lump. I still didn’t get it.

“So… have you been doing? Lowering my voice, I asked.

Caleb sighed. “I couldn’t leave. Emily, our kids left for college. House feels empty. Next, I watched these small ones sitting alone night after night. I stayed longer after delivery. Providing more food. “Just keeping them company.”

He paused, then said, “I know I should have told you. But I worried you’d be upset. That you’d assume I was spending time instead of working.”

Chest constricted.

I tortured myself for weeks, imagining the worst. He had been offering a few lonely kids fatherly love all along.

“Caleb, you know me better than that,” I muttered.

“I do,” he said. “I guess I was ashamed. Spending time here when we had troubles seems selfish. But these kids, Em… He lowered his tone. They needed one.

My tears burned. I felt stupid.

I muttered, “I’m so sorry, Caleb,” shaking my head. “I thought…”

“I can guess what you thought,” he replied, sitting next me. He gently took my hands. I understand why. I should have told you earlier.”

I dried my tears and looked toward the kitchen, where the kids were talking.

“May I stay?” I requested. “Can I help?”

His countenance relaxed. He grinned. “I like that.”

We spoke, laughed, and told stories with the kids that night. Jake initially regarded me with suspicion. He opened up later in the evening.

“Mom tries,” he said as the kids colored at the coffee table. But she’s all we have since Dad went. Someone must make money.”

I responded, “It must be hard for you having to keep up with school and take care of your siblings.”

Though he shrugged, I could sense responsibility in his young eyes. „Somebody must do it.”

When their mother returned home about 11 p.m., exhausted, she tensed at the sight of strangers.

“Who are you?” she said, alarmed, as she shielded her children.

After Caleb and I recounted everything, her shoulders dropped and her eyes welled up.

“Thank you,” she muttered. “I thought no one cared.”

I grabbed her hand. “You’re trying. No one should do it alone. If you don’t mind, we’ll help again tomorrow.”

She nodded, blinking tears, then glanced at her children—safe, happy, filled.

I stared at Caleb, the kindest man I had ever met and whom I almost doubted.

The silence felt strange on the way home. Lighter.

“I was so sure,” I said, watching the streetlights. “I was sure you were cheating.”

He grabbed my hand across the console.

“Never,” he insisted. “Not a million years.”

“I should have trusted you,” I said.

“And I should have been honest with you,” he said. “We both erred.”

The house was dark and quiet when we pulled in. Calib was right. Our house was too quiet once the kids went to college.

I gently asked, “Do you think we could have them over sometimes?”

Caleb smiled and kissed my cheek. “I wanted you to say that. Ask when we return tomorrow.”

This wasn’t my expected ending. It was the start of something more wonderful.

Late-night deliveries took Caleb to the same residence for weeks. At first, I ignored it.
