One day, I had to step in for a colleague and take over her group of children. It was my first time meeting the kids and their parents, so I was still unfamiliar with the dynamics of the group. The day was going smoothly until a mother came to the classroom in the evening, looking distressed. She informed me that she needed to go to the hospital for several days due to some pregnancy-related issues.

She explained that her husband worked late, not getting home until 10 PM, and asked how I could help with her situation. At that moment, I was confused and shocked. She seemed to be expecting me to offer a solution to her personal problem, and her tone suggested she thought I would just handle it. The statement made me feel furious because it seemed like she was expecting something unreasonable from me. I felt a wave of frustration and immediately responded that, unfortunately, I couldn’t solve her problem.

I made it clear that the kindergarten closed at 7 PM, and any child not picked up by that time was handed over to the police officers. I didn’t see how I could be of assistance in such a personal matter, especially since I had no prior relationship with her or her child. I suggested that she needed to figure out alternative arrangements for her daughter, as it wasn’t something the kindergarten could manage. To me, it seemed like a basic issue of planning ahead, and I couldn’t understand why she was asking me for such a favor.

However, what came next left me even more stunned. This woman, whom I was meeting for the first time, came up with what she thought was a “wonderful” solution. She asked if I could take her daughter home with me after 7 PM, keep her at my place, and then bring her back to their house by 10 PM when her husband would be home. The audacity of the request was almost unbelievable. I had never been asked to do something so inappropriate and invasive, especially by a stranger.

I felt completely uncomfortable and overwhelmed by the situation. It wasn’t just the fact that she was asking me to babysit outside of work hours; it was the sheer expectation that I, someone she barely knew, would drop everything and help her in such a personal way. I couldn’t help but feel that this was an abuse of trust and a gross violation of professional boundaries. There were plenty of other options available to her, but she seemed to think that I would just accept her demand without question.

After taking a moment to process what she had said, I politely but firmly declined her request. I reiterated that I couldn’t take her daughter home with me and that it was her responsibility to make arrangements. The whole interaction left me feeling frustrated and perplexed. I couldn’t believe how someone could be so inconsiderate of a stranger’s time and boundaries. It was a stark reminder of the importance of setting clear limits, both professionally and personally.

I used to work as a kindergarten teacher not too long ago.
