The joy of a newborn and first grandchild is something you never forget, but for one UK grandma, this wonderful occasion was filled with heartache.<\/p>\n

Back in 2019, Abbie Hallawell\u2019s grandson Parker John came into the world \u2013 but her 17-year-old daughter was left brain-dead and in a critical condition.<\/p>\n

Now, her family hopes her death \u201dwasn\u2019t totally in vain.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n17-year-old Teegan Barnard, from Havant, Hampshire, gave birth to a healthy 9lb 90z boy in September 2019. Sadly, the mother experienced serious complications and suffered a cardiac arrest after undergoing an emergency cesarean.<\/p>\n

According to the local newspaper The News, Teegan was a very \u2018small\u2019 mother and suffered some \u2018major\u2019 bleeding giving birth to Parker.<\/p>\n

She lost 1 gallon of blood and couldn\u2019t get enough oxygen \u2013 which led to a severe brain injury. The young woman passed away several weeks later at her home on October 7, 2019.<\/p>\n

She was 17 years of age at the time of her death.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was so excited \u2014 she would have been the best mummy in the world,\u201d Abbie, Teegans mother, said in 2019, according to The Sun.<\/p>\n

Abbie and Parker\u2019s father decided to raise the boy, and Abbie said she would do everything in her power to make sure her grandson knows how much his mom loved him.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe had so much love for him and didn\u2019t even get to show him. . . I\u2019d do anything to have her back \u2014 I miss her more than anything in the world. We were more like best friends than mother and daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n

Abbie made sure Teegan got to hold her baby boy in the final weeks of her life and took pictures to show to Parker as he grows up.<\/p>\n

\u201cSeeing Parker in his mummy\u2019s arms where he belongs has been so important to me,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The heartbroken grandmother even captured Parker smiling while lying next to his mom in her final moments.<\/p>\n

\u201cI put them together at every possible moment,\u201d Abbie says. \u201cNow she has gone, we dress Parker in vests with his mum\u2019s picture on. I want to keep her close to him always.\u201d<\/p>\n

Inquest<\/p>\n

In 2022, an inquest confirmed that a delay in recognizing the cause \u201cmade a material contribution\u201d to Teegan\u2019s death.<\/p>\n

The medical director of the trust that runs St Richard\u2019s Hospital in Chichester made a statement and said that the circumstances of Teegan\u2019s tragic death were \u201dextremely rare\u201d and \u201ddeeply affected everyone involved\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201dWe are determined that all possible learning from the inquest will be acted upon as we continue to do all we can to improve our services for women and children in our care,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Teegan\u2019s family welcomed the investigation and her mother now hopes that her daughter\u2019s death wasn\u2019t in vain.<\/p>\n

\u201dAll we can hope for now is that her death wasn\u2019t totally in vain and improvements are made to help other mums. We wouldn\u2019t wish the hurt and pain we continue to live with on anyone else,\u201d Abbie Hallawell said.<\/p>\n
