But then, when I first started school, my father brought Janice home, along with her two sons, my soon-to-be stepmother and step-siblings.<\/p>\n

Initially, everything was fine. Janice treated me well, brushing my hair every night until it was sleek and shiny. She even wanted me at her and Dad\u2019s wedding.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, Ellie,\u201d she would say, refusing to call me Eleanor, \u201cYou have to be my flower girl! Jackson and Avery will be the ring bearers, but you, my sweet girl, I need you to be my flower girl.\u201d<\/p>\n

I couldn\u2019t argue. Even if I tried to fight for myself, Janice would never let me hear the end of it. She would go on about how I should be grateful that she kept me in the house. Some days were civil, and others were loud and full of confrontation.<\/p>\n

For two years, I let Janice dictate my life. She changed the entire house, tailoring everything to her taste \u2014 there were few reminders of life with my father.<\/p>\n

I loved that clock. It used to terrify me when I was younger, but my father told me that it had been passed down for generations.<\/p>\n

When I got to school, I felt that a part of me was missing. I had felt the same way when my parents died, but I didn\u2019t expect to feel the same way over a clock.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat on earth are you talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ve been hiding it from you. But your father left everything to you, Elle. I\u2019m shocked. The inheritance, it\u2019s rightfully yours. Janice has been keeping this from you because she wants to have the upper hand.\u201d<\/p>\n

The revelation hit me like a freight train. All these years, under the same roof as Janice and her sons, I was the rightful heir to my father\u2019s estate, oblivious and wronged.<\/p>\n

I nodded, knowing full well that she couldn\u2019t see me.<\/p>\n

\u201cLeave the house tonight,\u201d she said. \u201cMy lawyer will work quickly, and Janice will know about it soon. I need to know that you\u2019re safely out of the house. I\u2019ll book you a ticket to me as soon as I can.\u201d<\/p>\n

I promised that I would be. I planned on going home, packing my things, and leaving for my friend Mariah\u2019s house as soon as I could.<\/p>\n

Just before I left my childhood home, I went into the kitchen and wrote a note to my stepmother and stepbrothers, not out of spite, but as a declaration of strength \u2014 especially for what was to come.<\/p>\n

The inheritance that you\u2019ve hidden from me, that you\u2019ve used to hold power over me, is rightfully mine. Consider this my final goodbye. I\u2019m leaving to claim what\u2019s mine, with or without your consent.<\/p>\n
