Jenny Carlson was 45 and she had been married for twenty-seven years. Most of those years had been happy, raising her children. That was back when Jenny believed her husband loved her.<\/p>\n

But Brad had changed. While Jenny had dedicated herself to their children and their home, Brad had dedicated himself to making money, a lot of money.<\/p>\n

He always said, \u201cJenny, we\u2019re partners, 50\/50, and don\u2019t you forget it! I couldn\u2019t be such a success without you.\u201d Jenny believed him, and she also believed he\u2019d be honest with her, just as she was with him.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s hard to pinpoint when exactly Jenny realized her marriage was over. Maybe it was when Brad forgot her birthday twice in a row, and it no longer hurt.<\/p>\n

Sitting alone in her bedroom, waiting for Brad, Jenny realized she wasn\u2019t in love with him anymore. She loved him, she respected him, he was her best friend, but the romance was dead.<\/p>\n

\nA few days later, Jenny said, \u201cAre you happy, Brad?\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked up from his laptop and frowned. \u201cOf course! Why wouldn\u2019t I be?\u201d<\/p>\n

Brad pressed his hands to his forehead and closed his eyes. \u201cOh, Jen\u2026\u201d he whispered. \u201cPlease, babe, can we talk about this in two weeks\u2019 time? I have a huge deal\u2026I want to be able to give us my full attention.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOk,\u201d Jenny agreed. \u201cTwo weeks\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease, babe,\u201d Brad said with tears in his eyes. \u201cPlease don\u2019t give up on us. Just give me a little time, okay?\u201d<\/p>\n

So Jenny did, and did she get a surprise! Two weeks later, Brad breezed in. \u201cThe deal went through!\u201d he cried.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan we talk tonight,\u201d Jenny asked. \u201cAbout us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brad sat down on the sofa and crossed his legs nonchalantly. \u201cWe can talk now!\u201d he said. \u201cSo\u2026 do you want a divorce or not?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA divorce?\u201d Jenny gasped. \u201cI thought you\u2026 You told me not to give up on us!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, you know!\u201d Brad waved a hand. \u201cThe things we say under pressure\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI see,\u201d Jenny said. \u201cIn that case, I will contact a lawyer and file the motion\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI already did,\u201d Brad said smiling. \u201cAnd I also filed for bankruptcy. You\u2019re not getting a CENT of my hard-earned money.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut you always said we were equal partners,\u201d Jenny gasped. \u201c50\/50, you said.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cForget it,\u201d Brad said. \u201cThat\u2019s just one of those things I said. It didn\u2019t mean anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLike \u2018I love you,’\u201d said Jenny bitterly.<\/p>\n

\u201cExactly!\u201d Brad said.<\/p>\n

By the end of the divorce process, Jenny was left with nothing. All she got was half of the equity on the house and most of it went towards legal expenses.<\/p>\n

Fortunately for Jenny, her three children were all grown up and out of the house. She had only herself to worry about, so she found a tiny apartment and went looking for work.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, Jenny had no qualifications and no experience. She had married Brad straight out of high school with her eldest already on the way. She had been the best mom, but now that was worth nothing.<\/p>\n

After a day of pounding the pavements, Jenny sat on her second-hand couch and cried. The last woman who had interviewed her had been kind. \u201cFind something you do better than anyone else,\u201d she advised.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat can I do better than anyone?\u201d she asked herself. Then she grinned. Her grandmother\u2019s chocolate pie! Jenny had inherited her grandmother\u2019s recipe book and the chocolate pie was a family favorite.<\/p>\n

The next day, she woke up at 4:00 and got to baking. At 7:00, she was at the door of the fashionable caf\u00e9 across the street with two pies in hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you don\u2019t sell the pies,\u201d Jenny said. \u201cI\u2019ll pay you. What have you got to lose?\u201d<\/p>\n

By 11:00, the caf\u00e9 owner was calling Jenny, asking for two more pies for the afternoon crowd. Then the customers started ordering whole pies to take home instead of just buying a slice.<\/p>\n

Jenny was a busy woman, and she got even busier when another caf\u00e9 contacted her, then another, and another\u2026 One day, a buyer from a deli chain contacted her and told her he\u2019d buy the pies frozen.<\/p>\n

With the owner of the first caf\u00e9 as her partner, Jenny started a factory and launched her own brand: Aunt Gigi\u2019s Pies. It was a roaring success, and three years later, Jenny was on her way to being a very wealthy woman.<\/p>\n

And it wasn\u2019t just her professional life that was blossoming. She\u2019d just started dating again \u2014 a handsome French food critic who adored her and loved chocolate pie.<\/p>\n

Jenny had a date with her charming French boyfriend at one of the city\u2019s most exclusive restaurants so she dressed up to the nines. She looked fabulous! She hopped into her brand new little red convertible and headed downtown.<\/p>\n

She stopped at the restaurant door, stepped out of her car, and prepared to hand over the car keys to the valet. Then she looked at the man again and gasped. \u201cBRAD?\u201d<\/p>\n

It was Brad in an ill-fitting red blazer and a black bow tie and he was parking cars! In fact, he was about to park HER car. Brad blushed and looked embarrassed.<\/p>\n

\u201cJenny,\u201d he said with a weak smile. \u201cYou look great!\u201d<\/p>\n

Jenny looked him over and replied, \u201cYou don\u2019t! What happened to you?\u201d<\/p>\n

Brad shrugged. \u201cAfter we divorced,\u201d he said, \u201ceverything went wrong. I made some bad investments\u2026I lost everything, Jenny.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, you poor thing!\u201d Jenny cried, and reached into her purse. \u201cHere you go, for old time\u2019s sake!\u201d And with a sweet smile, she pressed a bill into her ex-husband\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n

Three years ago Brad had left her with nothing, now he was the one with nothing and she was giving him more than he had left her \u2014 she was leaving him with a $1 tip!<\/p>\n
