He never learned to heel or sit or stay, he did things his way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He makes it clear that despite Beau\u2019s bad behaviors (including biting his famous owner and \u201csetting the house on fire\u201d) he was still fun to have around: \u201cDiscipline wasn\u2019t his bag. Stewart, growing increasingly emotional, describes calm nights by the fire when he would get Beau a ball, or the dog would come to sleep in their bed. It\u2019s often found in \u201cbest-of\u201d collections of Johnny Carson\u2019s tenure, and has over 4 million views on YouTube.<\/p>\n<p>The poem was so emotional that even the host couldn\u2019t help but shed a tear. Tonight Show sidekick Ed McMahon recalled it as one of the few times Carson choked up on air.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJohnny was moved by the way Jimmy Stewart delivered it,\u201d McMahon told Today in 2005. \u201cJimmy was a blend of great actor and great person. Both Johnny and I were in tears. Just a couple of maudlin mutt mourners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The poem came from a very real place for Stewart, who was a devoted lover of golden retrievers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI suppose the truth is that I\u2019d rather have a happy dog than a trained one,\u201d Stewart said, according to Psychology Today. \u201cMy dogs have never been good at things like \u2018sit\u2019, \u2018stay\u2019 or even \u2018come\u2019\u2026 I don\u2019t even mind it when the dogs jump up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of my favorites <3\n\nPosted by Jimmy Stewart Photo Collection on Tuesday, February 3, 2015\nStewart was on set filming a movie in Arizona when he got word that Beau was dying. Stewart took time off the shoot and rushed home to be with his dog in his final hours, according to the book Why We Love the Dogs We Do.\n\n\u201cI can\u2019t just tell you to put him to sleep like this,\u201d Stewart reportedly said. \u201cNot over the phone-not without seeing him. This experience led him to write his poem.\n\n\u201cAfter [Beau] died there were a lot of nights when I was certain that I could feel him get into bed beside me and I would reach out and pat his head,\u201d Stewart later recalled. \u201cThe feeling was so real that I wrote a poem about it and how much it hurt to realize that he wasn\u2019t going to be there any more.\u201d\n\nHe later published \u201cBeau\u201d in his book Jimmy Stewart and his Poems.\n\nWhat a beautiful poem, and a beautiful reading by the great Jimmy Stewart.
