A rich young woman mocks the janitor at her father\u2019s company and he decides to teach her a lesson she will never forget.<\/p>\n

Danielle Grobber was used to having everything her own way. She was beautiful, intelligent, talented, and very, very rich. Or at least, Danielle\u2019s father was very rich and she\u2019d always thought of his money as hers.<\/p>\n

So Danielle, or Danie, as her friends called her, was more than a little spoiled, but she always managed to charm her way out of trouble with her sweet talk and her dazzling smile. Then she crossed a line, and her father taught her a life lesson she would never forget.<\/p>\n

Danielle was about to go off on a two-week dream vacation to the Caribean and had talked her father into taking her on a shopping spree. Not that Danie was in need of anything, she just loved shopping with her dad.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, he had to skip their lunch to attend to some urgent issues, and so she\u2019d wandered around a bit before walking into a famous fast food restaurant and ordering herself a burger with all the trimmings, fries, a large soda, and an apple pie.<\/p>\n

She took her order and walked back to her dad\u2019s building which was surrounded by a well-tended lawn dotted with shady trees, comfortable benches, and murmuring fountains. She sat and ate her food while she texted her friends on her phone.<\/p>\n

When she finished, she wiped her lips, crumpled the napkin, and carefully applied lipstick. Then she got up and started to walk away, leaving all the packaging and left-overs on the bench.<\/p>\n

A voice stopped her in her tracks. \u201cExcuse me, miss!\u201d the voice said. \u201cPlease pick up your trash and put it in the bin.\u201d<\/p>\n

Treat everyone with respect if you want to be respected.
\nDanie turned around and stared at a thin elderly man in a janitor\u2019s uniform who was sweeping the garden path. \u201cExcuse me?\u201d she asked. \u201cAre you talking to ME?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, young lady,\u201d the man said. \u201cThis little park is for the people who work here to enjoy, and I don\u2019t think it\u2019s fair to leave rubbish behind.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t clean up!\u201d Danie said arrogantly. \u201cPeople clean up for ME. People like you, the servant class \u2014 isn\u2019t that your job? So do it \u2014 clean it up!\u201d<\/p>\n

The elderly man flushed. \u201cYoung lady,\u201d he said. \u201cMy job is to keep this building and this garden spick and span but what you did is disrespectful\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Danie interrupted him rudely. \u201cYou work for my father, which means you work for me! If I tell you to clean up, you clean up, if I tell you to lick my shoes, you lick my shoes or I\u2019ll get you fired!\u201d<\/p>\n

It was at that moment that Danie heard a voice like thunder: \u201cDANIELLE!\u201d She turned around to find her father standing there looking furious. \u201cWho do you think you are?\u201d Jack Grobber asked her. \u201cHow dare you humiliate this man, who has worked for me for over 20 years. A hard-working man, with a family!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDaddy?\u201d said Danie in her best little girl voice. \u201cPlease don\u2019t be mad at me\u2026I\u2019m sooo sorry!\u201d But under her sweet smile, Jack caught a flicker of mockery. Danie thought she was going to get away with this, just like she\u2019d gotten away with everything in the past.<\/p>\n

\u201cApologize to Mr. Terence, Danielle,\u201d Jack ordered and watched as his daughter turned to the janitor with her most charming manner \u2014 but now he knew it was all an act.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s my fault,\u201d Jack thought. \u201cI have to put this right!\u201d But how do you undo a lifetime of indulgence and teach a young woman respect and responsibility?<\/p>\n

Then Jack had a brilliant idea. \u201cMr. Terence, you look very tired!\u201d he said. \u201cI think you need a vacation!\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Terence smiled and shook his head. \u201cMy wife says the same, Mr. Grobber, but I\u2019m saving up my vacation days for the end of the year so we can spend Christmas with the grandchildren!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s quite alright, Mr. Terence,\u201d Jack said. \u201cI\u2019m giving you two weeks off and an all-expenses-paid trip to the Bahamas for you and your wife!\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Terence\u2019s gaped. \u201cSir? The Bahamas\u2026But who will fill in for me?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t worry, Mr. Terence,\u201d Jack said smiling. \u201cMy daughter Danielle will be more than happy to fill in for you, to make up for the unpleasant way she treated you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWHAT?\u201d screamed Danie, \u201cAre you mad, daddy? I\u2019m going on vacation\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot anymore,\u201d Jack said. \u201cMr. and Mrs. Terence are going in your place, and you will do his job while he is away.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYOU CAN\u2019T DO THAT TO ME!\u201d screamed Danielle. \u201cI\u2019m not a janitor! Cleaning toilets? Sweeping? Picking up other people\u2019s trash? I won\u2019t do it!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes you will,\u201d her father said coldly. \u201cOr I will cut off your allowance, take away that convertible\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s MY car!\u201d cried Danie.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, Danielle,\u201d Jack said quietly. \u201cIt\u2019s MY car. I paid for it, I pay for the insurance and the gas. It\u2019s all mine. Everything you have, I give you, so I think it\u2019s time you learned how hard people have to work for every dollar.\u201d<\/p>\n

Danie knew her father very well, and by the look in his eyes, she realized she\u2019d crossed some boundary. He would not be sweet-talked out of this crazy notion!<\/p>\n

\u201cYou start on Monday,\u201d Jack told her, then he turned to Mr. Terence. \u201cAnd you\u2019d better go home and pack, Mr. Terence! Bon Voyage!\u201d<\/p>\n

Monday morning Danie was there in her uniform, cleaning and sweeping, and emptying trash cans. By the end of the day she was exhausted, her beautiful nails were ruined, and her soft pampered hands were red and sore.<\/p>\n

By the time Mr. Terence came back from the Bahamas with an amazing tan, Danie was quite an expert at the job and he was happy to report to Mr. Grobber that she\u2019d left everything spick and span \u2014 no trash in the garden!<\/p>\n
