It was supposed to be a pleasant evening. Caleb and Denise had their friends, Sam and Kate, over for dinner.<\/p>\n
As they ate, Denise talked excitedly about her recent trip, but Caleb seemed worried and distant.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was wonderful, you know,\u201d Denise shared, \u201cI\u2019m planning a surprise for Caleb, but it\u2019s a secret for now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Caleb tried to smile but looked troubled. When it was his turn to talk, he shared his struggles.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve been having a hard time,\u201d he said quietly. \u201cI lost my job unexpectedly, and our bills are piling up.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sam and Kate looked worried. They knew Caleb was a hardworking man and felt awful for him.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, please let us know. We\u2019re here for both of you,\u201d Kate added, showing support.<\/p>\n
Caleb sighed. \u201cThanks for the help, guys, but I\u2019m looking for a job. It\u2019s just that things have been tough.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHoney,\u201d Denise said. \u201cIt\u2019ll get better. Don\u2019t let this bog you down. We need to stay positive and work through this together.\u201d<\/p>\n
Caleb, however, wasn\u2019t in the mood for optimism, and Denise\u2019s words only frustrated him further. \u201cYou\u2019re always pretending everything is fine!\u201d he grumbled.<\/p>\n
The mood turned awkward. Denise tried to change the subject back to her trip, but Caleb cut her off, yelling, \u201cOK, stop, Denise! Stop acting like everything\u2019s fine. We have big problems! And why have you been spending so much recently? What was that trip really about?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHey, bud,\u201d Sam intervened, \u201cMaybe this isn\u2019t the best time for this talk.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYeah, let\u2019s enjoy the evening,\u201d Kate suggested, trying to lighten the mood.<\/p>\n
But it didn\u2019t work. The evening ended with a heavy silence, and Sam and Kate left early.<\/p>\n

Caleb was upset by how the evening had unfolded and confronted Denise now that they were alone in their home.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou don\u2019t support me,\u201d he said, pacing around. \u201cYou\u2019re spending too much. And you used to care about your diet, but now\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
Denise was shocked. \u201cHow can you say that, Caleb? I\u2019m trying so hard,\u201d she replied, her voice shaking.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s just the truth, Denise!\u201d he snarled. \u201cYou\u2019ve let yourself go! You\u2019re too fat to even look recognizable. Didn\u2019t you see Kate? She\u2019s so fit and healthy!\u201d<\/p>\n
Denise was hurt. \u201cYou don\u2019t see any of my efforts? How can you say this to me? I can\u2019t stand here and take this!\u201d she then ran to their bedroom, crying.<\/p>\n

Caleb knew he had been harsh on her, but he was too proud to apologize. He turned on the TV to distract himself. The night passed with both feeling alone and misunderstood.<\/p>\n
The next morning, Caleb woke up in the guest bedroom. The house felt unusually empty and quiet, except for the distant sound of a door slamming shut.<\/p>\n
With a sense of unease, he got out of bed and shuffled towards the window. Peering through the curtains, he saw Denise outside. She was dressed in a simple yet elegant outfit, her hair neatly done.<\/p>\n
But what caught Caleb\u2019s attention was the sleek, black Rolls-Royce parked in front of their modest home.<\/p>\n
Caleb\u2019s eyes narrowed as he watched a man step out of the driver\u2019s side. He held the passenger door open for Denise, who slipped into the car with a grace that Caleb hadn\u2019t noticed in a long time.<\/p>\n

Who was that man? Why did Denise seem so happy with him?<\/p>\n
Caleb tried calling her, but she didn\u2019t answer. Worried and confused, he decided to search their bedroom for clues \u2013 anything that could explain her strange behavior and the new man in her life.<\/p>\n
There, he found letters revealing Denise had inherited $500,000 from a distant, deceased relative. Caleb was shocked and felt betrayed that Denise hadn\u2019t shared this with him, given their financial condition.<\/p>\n
Deciding to fix things and win her over, Caleb bought Denise\u2019s favorite flowers and chocolates and went to her office, nervous but hopeful.<\/p>\n
\u201cDenise, I\u2026 I\u2019m sorry. I was wrong,\u201d Caleb said, offering the flowers. \u201cI shouldn\u2019t have yelled at you last night.\u201d<\/p>\n
Before she could respond, they were interrupted. \u201cIs everything alright here, Denise?\u201d a voice asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m just checking in on Denise. Is there a problem?\u201d James replied cautiously.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re after her for her money, aren\u2019t you? Just back off!\u201d<\/p>\n
Denise, shocked, tried to calm Caleb down. \u201cCaleb, please, this isn\u2019t the place.\u201d<\/p>\n
But Caleb was too upset and kept arguing, inviting stares from the other people.<\/p>\n
James decided to leave to avoid further conflict. Denise then turned to Caleb, tears in her eyes.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re the one who is here because of the money, Caleb,\u201d she said. \u201cAll these apologies, the flowers, it\u2019s not because you care about us. It\u2019s because of the inheritance. Right?\u201d<\/p>\n
Caleb looked her in the eye. \u201cI\u2019ve been there for you, accepted you for who you are. And now, you\u2019re ready to throw me away for a younger man?\u201d he snapped.<\/p>\n
\u201cIs that what you think of me? That I don\u2019t value our years together?\u201d<\/p>\n
Caleb would\u2019ve continued to create drama, but the security intervened and told him to leave. Outside, Caleb realized his mistake. He had let his fear and pride ruin his chance to fix things with Denise.<\/p>\n
Back home, Caleb felt trapped and alone. He drank whiskey, trying to forget his troubles. He looked at the bills, realizing how much debt he was in.<\/p>\n
Then, his thoughts returned to Denise. \u201cShe\u2019s replacing me with a younger man,\u201d he muttered, feeling bitter. The idea of the woman he had spent so many years with now in someone else\u2019s arms was unbearable.<\/p>\n
Caleb poured himself another drink, feeling sorry for himself. \u201cWhere did I go wrong?\u201d he asked out loud, but no one answered. He looked around their quiet house, realizing he might lose it all.<\/p>\n
As the evening progressed, Caleb drank more, trying to forget his troubles. He thought about Denise, the younger man, and the inheritance. Anger and a need for revenge grew inside him.<\/p>\n
And then, Caleb had a dangerous idea. He went to the garage and poured gasoline from a canister into a container with trembling hands. He didn\u2019t care that he had spilled the liquid on his clothes. His plan was to make Denise regret everything.<\/p>\n
He took the gasoline, got into his car, and drove to Denise\u2019s office. He was angry and not thinking clearly, driven by the desire to get back at her. He convinced himself that Denise deserved what was coming, although deep down, he knew it was wrong.<\/p>\n
Caleb\u2019s car rolled to a stop in the parking lot near Denise\u2019s office. He took the gasoline and poured it all over Denise\u2019s fancy car, then set it on fire. A roaring blaze shattered the night\u2019s silence.<\/p>\n
His jacket accidentally caught fire in the process, and Caleb immediately felt the searing heat on his skin, the agony of the burns. He was panting, exhausted after extinguishing the fire on his jacket.<\/p>\n
Then, he heard the distant sound of sirens \u2013 someone must have seen the fire and called for help \u2014 and panicked. He spun around and began running, his heart racing.<\/p>\n
But suddenly, the world around him started to spin, the pain becoming too much to bear. His knees buckled, his breathing labored. He fell to the ground, his vision blurring, the sounds of the night fading into the background.<\/p>\n
Caleb woke up in the hospital room. The nurse there, noticing he was awake, approached his bedside with a clipboard.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re awake, Mr. Johnson,\u201d she said softly. \u201cYou\u2019ve sustained some serious burns, but you\u2019re out of danger now.\u201d<\/p>\n
Caleb\u2019s mind was foggy, but the previous night\u2019s memories quickly came rushing to him \u2014 the argument with Denise, the gasoline, the fire.<\/p>\n
Before he could respond, the door to his room opened, and Denise walked in.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy are you here? To see how you\u2019ve ruined me?\u201d Caleb asked angrily, then winced due to the throbbing pain enveloping his body.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m here because I care,\u201d Denise replied, looking sad. \u201cI didn\u2019t mean to hurt you.\u201d<\/p>\n
The nurse, sensing the tension, offered to give them some privacy. \u201cI\u2019ll be outside if you need anything,\u201d she said before leaving the room.<\/p>\n
\u201cI wanted to help you, Caleb,\u201d Denise continued. \u201cI was willing to pay off all our debts with the inheritance. I just wanted you to see what we had, to appreciate our life together.\u201d<\/p>\n
Caleb\u2019s brow furrowed, and he shifted uncomfortably on the bed. \u201cHelp me? By making me jealous?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYes,\u201d Denise replied softly. \u201cI thought if I made you a little jealous, you\u2019d remember how much we meant to each other. That\u2019s why I rented the Rolls-Royce and had James, my co-worker, pick me up. It was all staged, Caleb. There was never anything between James and me.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy go through all that instead of just talking to me?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI tried, Caleb. But you were so consumed by our financial problems that you wouldn\u2019t listen. I thought a grand gesture might make you see things differently. Because of what you did, Caleb, I had to use almost all of the inheritance money.\u201d<\/p>\n
Caleb\u2019s heart sank. The enormity of what he had done was beginning to dawn on him.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Rolls-Royce wasn\u2019t ours. It was rented. And after you set it on fire, I had to pay for its loss. It was a lot of money, Caleb. The rest of the money\u2026 I had to use it for your treatment here in the hospital. The burns you suffered, the care you needed, it was expensive.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cDenise, I\u2026 I don\u2019t know what to say,\u201d Caleb stammered. \u201cI never\u2026 I didn\u2019t think\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
The air grew heavy in the sterile hospital room as Denise reached into her bag and pulled out a stack of papers.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese are divorce papers. I can\u2019t do this anymore. I never want to see you again,\u201d she said, leaving the papers beside him. Caleb was heartbroken but couldn\u2019t find the words to stop her. Denise left, ending their marriage.<\/p>\n
Years later, Caleb was working in a caf\u00e9. He had lost his home, job, everything and now washed dishes for a living.<\/p>\n
His boss often scolded him for being slow, but Caleb never dared to defend himself because this job kept him afloat. His scars from the fire were visible, which sometimes made him self-conscious.<\/p>\n
One day, Caleb saw Denise in the caf\u00e9, looking happy with another man. He felt deep sadness watching her, realizing all he had lost because of his actions. Now, he was stuck in a mundane job, far from the life he once dreamed of with Denise.<\/p>\n
