Hi! I\u2019m Bethany, a single mom of two boys, Austin (10) and Sheldon (12), and we just moved into our dream home a few months ago.<\/p>\n

I was so excited to provide my kids with a peaceful, nature-filled life in this new neighborhood. Little did I know, our next-door neighbors would turn our little slice of heaven into a living hell.<\/p>\n

When we first saw this house, the kids were over the moon. The backyard had a beautiful little lake that we would get to share access to with our neighbors.<\/p>\n

Austin and Sheldon could hardly contain their excitement about all the fishing and boating they were going to do.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom, can we get a canoe? Please, please, please?\u201d they begged.<\/p>\n

I laughed and said, \u201cOf course, as soon as we\u2019re all settled in!\u201d<\/p>\n

The first few weeks were blissful. The kids spent hours out by the lake, catching frogs and just enjoying the fresh air.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s when we met Oswald and Patricia, our next-door neighbors. They had disdain in their eyes from the moment we introduced ourselves. It seemed like they weren\u2019t too happy about having us as their neighbors.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo you\u2019re the ones hogging our lake, huh?\u201d Oswald grumbled.<\/p>\n

I was taken aback.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour lake? But the realtor said we all shared access to it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, she didn\u2019t tell you the whole story, did she? This lake is ours, and we don\u2019t appreciate you letting your brats play in it all day long.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brats? Did he just call my kids brats? I thought. How dare he?<\/p>\n

I tried to reason with him, explaining that the kids were being respectful and not causing any trouble.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want them to stay off our property. If we see them out there again, there will be consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n

With that, they stormed back into their house, leaving me fuming.<\/p>\n

At that point, I knew I had to have a talk with the kids.<\/p>\n

\u201cGuys, I know how much you love the lake, but it seems our neighbors have an issue with us using it. So, for now, I need you to stay away from that area of the backyard, okay?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut Mom, we were gonna go fishing tomorrow!\u201d Austin complained. \u201cThat\u2019s not fair.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sheldon chimed in, \u201cYeah, why do they get to decide if we can use the lake or not? It\u2019s not just theirs!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know, sweetie, I know,\u201d I sighed. \u201cBut we have to pick our battles. Let\u2019s just give them some space for now, and hopefully, they\u2019ll come around.\u201d<\/p>\n

The kids reluctantly agreed, but I could tell they were crushed. Still, they tried their best to stay away from the lake area.<\/p>\n

A few days later, I was out hanging laundry when I heard Oswald yelling again. The kids had taken the canoe out, and he was screaming at them to get off his property.<\/p>\n

I rushed over and tried to explain that they were in the water, not on his land. But he wouldn\u2019t listen.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t care, keep them away from my lake!\u201d he shouted, storming back inside.<\/p>\n

The kids came back to shore and I felt so heartbroken to see tears in their eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom, why does he hate us so much?\u201d Austin asked.<\/p>\n

I was silent. I didn\u2019t have a good answer.<\/p>\n

The final straw came a couple of days later.<\/p>\n

The kids had decided to go fishing, and I figured I\u2019d let them since they\u2019d been so good about staying away from the lake.<\/p>\n

But as soon as they got their rods out, here comes Oswald again.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s it, I\u2019ve had it with you polluting my lake! Do you have any idea how much environmental damage those hooks and lines can do?\u201d<\/p>\n

Austin and Sheldon stood there, stunned.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut we\u2019re just fishing, we\u2019re not hurting anything!\u201d Sheldon tried to explain.<\/p>\n

Oswald ignored him and continued his rant. \u201cI want you and your brats to stay away from my lake, you hear me?!\u201d<\/p>\n

With that, he stomped back inside. The kids were devastated. Again.<\/p>\n

The next day, I went out to hang more laundry and what do I see but a fence going up in the lake, dividing it right down the middle.<\/p>\n

I couldn\u2019t believe Oswald had actually put up a barrier to keep the kids out. What was he thinking? Why did he think he owned that lake?<\/p>\n

I was furious. All I could think of was going to his house to talk to him. And that\u2019s what I did.<\/p>\n

\u201cOswald, you can\u2019t do this! That lake belongs to both of our properties,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

\u201cActually, I can. And I just did,\u201d he smirked. \u201cThat lake is mine, and I\u2019ll do whatever I want with it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut what about my kids? They love playing out here, you can\u2019t just take that away from them!\u201d<\/p>\n

Oswald shrugged. \u201cNot my problem. They need to find somewhere else to play.\u201d<\/p>\n

Defeated, I went back inside. The kids were heartbroken when they saw the fence blocking off their beloved lake.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom, what are we going to do? We can\u2019t even go fishing anymore!\u201d Sheldon cried.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Austin just sat there silently, a single tear rolling down his cheek. I hated seeing them so upset, but I didn\u2019t know what to do.<\/p>\n

Oswald was being completely unreasonable, and I was at a loss.<\/p>\n

A couple days later, I decided to take the kids to visit my sister for the night. I figured they could use a change of scenery, and maybe some time away would make Oswald and Patricia back off a bit.<\/p>\n

As we were driving back home the next evening, I noticed an excavator in our backyard.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat in the world\u2026?\u201d I muttered, pulling into the driveway.<\/p>\n

To my horror, the excavator was in the process of burying our half of the lake under a mountain of dirt.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, no, no!\u201d I cried, jumping out of the car.<\/p>\n

The kids followed, equally devastated.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom, they\u2019re killing the fishies!\u201d Austin wailed.<\/p>\n

At that point, I knew I had to stop this. I immediately stormed over to the workers.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you think you\u2019re doing?! Get that thing out of my backyard right now!\u201d<\/p>\n

One of the workers looked at me, unfazed.<\/p>\n

\u201cSorry ma\u2019am, we\u2019ve been hired to fill in this section of the lake. Not our call.\u201d<\/p>\n

I whirled around to see Oswald standing there.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou!\u201d I shouted. \u201cHow dare you do this? That\u2019s our property, you can\u2019t just destroy it!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s your property but the lake belongs to me,\u201d he smiled. \u201cI\u2019m just getting rid of it because it\u2019s been nothing but a nuisance, lowering my property value.\u201d<\/p>\n

I was seething. \u201cYou\u2019re insane! This is illegal, you can\u2019t just bulldoze our land.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGood luck proving that. I\u2019ve got the proper permits, all above board.\u201d<\/p>\n

I knew he was lying, and I wanted to teach him a lesson he wouldn\u2019t forget.<\/p>\n

But before I could do anything, karma took its toll. As the excavator continued to bury the lake, suddenly the water level rapidly began rising on Oswald\u2019s side.<\/p>\n

His entire backyard was flooded within minutes, and then the water began entering his house.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat the\u2014?!\u201d he shouted as he rushed inside.<\/p>\n

\u201cOswald, do something! Stop this! The water\u2019s going to ruin everything,\u201d Patricia yelled.<\/p>\n

I could see the workers looking at each other in panic. That\u2019s when I understood it was their fault because they didn\u2019t consider the water displacement. And I guess Oswald also realized it.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou idiots!\u201d he yelled at the workers. \u201cI\u2019m not paying you a cent! Get out of here!\u201d<\/p>\n

Karma had struck Oswald and Patricia right where it hurt. As they stood there, ankle-deep in water, I couldn\u2019t help but feel a tinge of satisfaction.<\/p>\n

Once the workers were gone, I quickly hired my own crew to re-dig our section of the lake.<\/p>\n

Within a few days, the water was back to normal and the kids were out there fishing and playing to their hearts\u2019 content.<\/p>\n

Oswald and Patricia? They had to move out for weeks to get their home repaired from the flooding.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m just glad this whole saga is finally over.<\/p>\n
