The wedding was everything we could have imagined and more.<\/p>\n

Emma and I have been settling into our lives together, finally moving from a cramped apartment into a cozy house with a garden for Emma. We also adopted a rambunctious puppy named Max. We were both advancing in our careers.<\/p>\n

One Sunday afternoon, Emma and I invited Jerry and Linda over for dinner at our home. To be honest, we were excited to share some big news with them: we were ready to start trying for a baby.<\/p>\n

I was completely floored.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had no idea,\u201d I said simply. \u201cYou never mentioned anything about this being a loan. We wouldn\u2019t have accepted if we had known.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jerry\u2019s face reddened, and he looked down at his hands.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe didn\u2019t want to burden you with it at the time, but things have changed, Simon. We need that money back. And look, you guys moved into a new house, clearly you\u2019re doing well.\u201d<\/p>\n

Emma was on the verge of tears. She sat at the edge of her chair, holding her fork tightly.<\/p>\n

\u201cDad, we just told you that we\u2019re trying to have a baby. That\u2019s been our focus, and we\u2019re still paying off this house. We don\u2019t have that kind of money lying around.\u201d<\/p>\n

Linda\u2019s eyes flashed with anger as she turned to her daughter.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, you need to find it somewhere. We\u2019ve done a lot for you, Emma, and it\u2019s time you stepped up.\u201d<\/p>\n

The tension was palpable.<\/p>\n

We continued the rest of the meal in silence. Linda attacked the roasted potatoes and continued to help herself to garlic bread. Jerry just sipped on his soda while holding his head.<\/p>\n

Finally, they left us alone. And Emma broke down into tears.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t believe they would do this to us,\u201d she sobbed. \u201cHow could they be so cruel?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll figure it out,\u201d I promised, even though I had no idea how.<\/p>\n

The week that followed was horrible. Emma and I racked our brains trying to come up with a solution. We considered taking out a loan, but the thought of more debt was overwhelming.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to take the lotto,\u201d Emma said, pulling out her phone. \u201cI can do it online and we can just hope for the best.\u201d<\/p>\n

Oh, the foreshadowing this was.<\/p>\n

A few days later, Emma\u2019s sister, Sasha, called us. She was upset and mentioned something about a lottery.<\/p>\n

\u201cDidn\u2019t you hear?\u201d Sasha asked. \u201cMom and Dad won the lottery a few months ago. But they have been hiding it from everyone, but now they\u2019re in trouble because of it. Something about taxes. They\u2019ve been trying to get money from Tim and me, too.\u201d<\/p>\n

Emma and I were stunned.<\/p>\n

Jerry and Linda had come into a windfall of money and still had the audacity to demand money from us?<\/p>\n

It was beyond comprehension.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll ignore them,\u201d Emma said. \u201cThey can take some time away from us to sort themselves out.\u201d<\/p>\n

But still, I was stressed out. I wanted to have at least a portion of the money available when it came up again.<\/p>\n

Then, something unexpected happened to us once again.<\/p>\n

\u201cAunt Mildred passed on,\u201d Emma told me when she was in the kitchen chopping up veggies for soup. \u201cBut she has left me all her money! Her entire inheritance is all mine!\u201d<\/p>\n

We were shocked and saddened by her passing, no doubt. But also deeply touched by her gesture.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have to meet with her lawyer tomorrow, Simon,\u201d Emma said. \u201cCan you get time off work?\u201d<\/p>\n

The lawyer explained that Aunt Mildred had heard about the situation with Jerry and Linda and decided to leave money behind for us because she couldn\u2019t believe her sister\u2019s actions.<\/p>\n

I knew that Sasha would spread the word.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe money was originally supposed to go to your mother, Emma,\u201d the lawyer said. \u201cBut when Mildred discovered the truth, she called for me to change her wishes legally. The money is yours.\u201d<\/p>\n

When it came down to the details, the inheritance was much larger than the cost of our wedding, and in her will, Mildred specifically mentioned that it was to help us create a secure future for our family.<\/p>\n

As the news spread among the family, Jerry and Linda had no choice but to reflect on their actions. Their greed had cost them dearly.<\/p>\n

One evening, as Emma and I were assembling a new bookshelf we had bought, Jerry called.<\/p>\n
