Picture this: we\u2019re out for lunch, and everyone\u2019s scanning the menu, looking for something tasty but reasonably priced. Then there\u2019s Samantha and Arnold, zeroing in on the most expensive items.<\/p>\n

After ordering, they\u2019ll turn to whoever\u2019s closest and start their sob story.<\/p>\n

They\u2019ve pulled this stunt with everyone in the group, and I\u2019ve had enough. I decided I wasn\u2019t going to go out for dinner or lunch with Samantha and Arnold ever again.<\/p>\n

I refuse to be used like this.<\/p>\n

So, last weekend, Jason called to invite me to a casual dinner with the group.<\/p>\n

I bit my lip. \u201cWho\u2019s coming?\u201d<\/p>\n

I groaned internally. \u201cJason, I don\u2019t think I can make it if Samantha and Arnold are going to be there.\u201d<\/p>\n

I was about to decline again when an idea struck me. A slightly wicked, definitely petty, but oh-so-satisfying idea.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know what? I\u2019ll be there,\u201d I said, trying to keep the mischief out of my voice.<\/p>\n

\u201cReally?\u201d Jason sounded surprised but pleased. \u201cGreat! I\u2019ll see you Friday at 7.\u201d<\/p>\n

As I hung up, I couldn\u2019t help but smile. This was going to be interesting.<\/p>\n

Friday night rolled around, and I arrived at the restaurant right on time. Everyone was already there, chatting and laughing.<\/p>\n

I slid into the booth next to Betty, across from Samantha and Arnold.<\/p>\n

\u201cCecelia!\u201d Samantha cooed. \u201cSo glad you could make it. Isn\u2019t this place fabulous?\u201d<\/p>\n

I forced a smile. \u201cIt\u2019s lovely.\u201d<\/p>\n

The waiter came to take our orders. Most of the group ordered reasonably priced meals, around $25 each. Then it was Samantha and Arnold\u2019s turn.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll have the Wagyu steak, medium-rare,\u201d Samantha purred. \u201cAnd a glass of the 2015 Cabernet, please.\u201d<\/p>\n

Arnold nodded approvingly. \u201cMake that two, and add the lobster tail to mine.\u201d<\/p>\n

I could see Jason\u2019s eyes widen slightly. Their orders were easily $150 each.<\/p>\n

When it was my turn, everyone was looking at me. Here\u2019s the catch: I just pointed to a $3 iced tea on the menu and sent the waiter away.<\/p>\n

Jason looked at me, confused. \u201cAren\u2019t you hungry, Cecelia?\u201d<\/p>\n

I shrugged. \u201cLost my appetite, I guess.\u201d<\/p>\n

Betty and Harry exchanged glances, then quickly changed their orders to just drinks as well.<\/p>\n

We chatted about work and life while waiting for the food. Soon, the waiter arrived with the meals.<\/p>\n

Samantha and Arnold\u2019s plates looked like something out of a food magazine. Perfectly seared steaks, glistening lobster tails, and colorful vegetable garnishes.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh my,\u201d Samantha said, eyeing her plate. \u201cThis steak looks a bit overdone. And is this asparagus? I\u2019m not a fan.\u201d<\/p>\n

Arnold nodded in agreement. \u201cThe lobster seems a bit small. I hope it\u2019s worth the price.\u201d<\/p>\n

I caught Betty rolling her eyes and had to stifle a laugh.<\/p>\n

That was my cue. I stood up and smiled sweetly at the waiter.<\/p>\n

\u201cActually, we\u2019ll be splitting this three ways. Jason, Samantha, and Arnold had meals. The rest of us just had drinks, which we\u2019ve already paid for at the bar.\u201d<\/p>\n

Everyone was stunned.<\/p>\n

Silence.<\/p>\n

Then, I saw Arnold squint his eyes in confusion and widen them as he understood what would happen next. His face flushed red in anger.<\/p>\n

The next morning, my phone was buzzing with messages. Samantha and Arnold were livid, calling me mean and blaming me for their high bill.<\/p>\n

I couldn\u2019t help but laugh. Their steaks alone cost more than what they ended up paying!<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Jason\u2019s messages were a mix of frustration and begrudging respect.<\/p>\n
