Alice started working for Martin after leaving the foster system when she was 17 years old. At the time, the job was recommended to her by her foster mother, who was a good friend of the wealthy blind man.<\/p>\n

I was afraid of leaving the foster care system because I didn\u2019t think anyone would hire me. Then Mrs. Chester said you needed a nurse and here I am!\u201d<\/p>\n

Martin nodded. \u201cRight. It\u2019s been ten years. Time flies, huh?\u201d he said, reaching for the sandwich that Alice prepared for him. That same moment, Martin\u2019s son Adam entered the kitchen.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy is it that you only ever make breakfast for dad? You\u2019re a slave, you\u2019re supposed to be serving everyone at home,\u201d he scoffed at Alice. The word \u201cslave\u201d made Alice\u2019s stomach twist, and she was close to tears when she heard it.<\/p>\n

\u201cAdam!\u201d Martin suddenly yelled, making both Alice and Adam jump in surprise. \u201cHow dare you call Alice a slave! Insult her once more and you can forget that you\u2019re my son! Get out of here before you make me even angrier!\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Adam shook his head and slowly left the kitchen. \u201cI don\u2019t understand why you favor her over your own son,\u201d he muttered as he left.<\/p>\n

Martin apologized to Alice and asked her to have breakfast with him. She obliged but sat quietly. She still couldn\u2019t believe that Adam called her a slave.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can tell that you\u2019re sad,\u201d Martin told Alice. \u201cI\u2019m sorry about how my children treat you. I don\u2019t know what my wife and I did for them to grow up that way.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s alright, sir. I\u2019m here for you anyway, not for them. I\u2019m so lucky to have you as my employer. You are so kind to me, and that\u2019s all that matters. I see you as the only father figure I\u2019ve ever had in my life,\u201d Alice admitted.<\/p>\n

Martin\u2019s face suddenly fell as he heard this. However, he slowly recovered and tried to put a smile back on his face. \u201cYour birthday is coming up, right?\u201d he asked her.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, sir. My birthday is in three days,\u201d Alice replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will celebrate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Three days later, it was Alice\u2019s 30th birthday. When she went to prepare breakfast, Martin was already in the kitchen with a smile on his face. Beside him were his sons Adam and James, and his daughters Lucy and Eva.<\/p>\n

Alice checked the clock on the wall, and it read six in the morning. She started to panic about not preparing breakfast on time, as she knew that Martin and his children usually woke up at eight.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlice, are you here?\u201d Martin asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, sir,\u201d Alice said frantically. \u201cI\u2019m sorry, I didn\u2019t know you were going to wake up early today. I\u2019ll get breakfast ready soon,\u201d she said, rushing to get some ingredients out of the refrigerator.<\/p>\n

\u201cCome on, Alice. We\u2019re starving,\u201d Lucy mocked.<\/p>\n

\u201cBreakfast can wait,\u201d Martin suddenly interrupted. \u201cI have a gift waiting for you outside, Alice. Happy 30th birthday,\u201d he said. He slowly stood up, trying to get a feel of his surroundings.<\/p>\n

\u201cA gift outside?\u201d James asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve never given me a gift that needed us to go outdoors,\u201d Eva added.<\/p>\n

Alice guided Martin out the door, as his four children followed behind them. When they got out, a small car with a ribbon on top was waiting for them.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnbelievable! Are you serious?\u201d Adam scoffed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s not fair! Why are you giving your maid a car?!\u201d Lucy said before storming away.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlice has been by my side for ten years. She is family to me, and nothing you can say will ever change that,\u201d Martin told his children.<\/p>\n

That day, Martin hosted a small party in Alice\u2019s honor. They were joined by other caretakers in his large property \u2014 his gardener, driver, and housekeeper.<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you, sir. I don\u2019t know what I did to deserve your kindness, but I promise to do my job well for as long as you need me,\u201d Alice promised.<\/p>\n

Through the years, Alice saw Martin as a father she enjoyed spending time with rather than her boss. Likewise, Martin treated Alice like his own daughter.<\/p>\n

Martin\u2019s health started to deteriorate when he turned 80 years old. At one point, he felt the end of his life was near, so he asked to see all of his children, including Alice.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know you all have been wondering who I\u2019m leaving my estate to. Lucy, Eva, Adam, and James, you already have control of the business I started. You can continue to run it. As for this house, everything in it, and my money, I give it all to Alice.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?! What did this witch tell you?! Why are you leaving your inheritance to her?!\u201d Lucy protested.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou will hear from my lawyer! From ALL our lawyers,\u201d Adam said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is precisely why I decided to leave everything to Alice; because I knew you were only after my money. It was only Alice who took care of me all these years. And besides, there\u2019s something I haven\u2019t told you\u2026\u201d Martin said.<\/p>\n

Before Martin could speak, his four children walked out in protest. They left him alone with Alice, and he started to speak again.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry it took me this long, but I did not want anything to change, that is why I am only telling you now. Alice, you are my biological daughter\u2026 Your mother left me when she found out I couldn\u2019t marry her. I had to marry somebody else. When she died, you were left in the orphanage, and my friend became your foster mother. She only told me you were my daughter when you were 17,\u201d Martin said with tears in his eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry, Alice. I hope I was able to treat you well in the years that we knew each other. I love you,\u201d he told her.<\/p>\n

Alice hugged Martin tearfully. \u201cI love you,\u201d she whispered. \u201cI\u2019ve always felt you were my dad, and now, what you said confirms it. I am so grateful for the time we shared, dad.\u201d<\/p>\n

What can we learn from this story?<\/p>\n

Be nice to those who help you. Everybody deserves the same respect. Martin\u2019s children did not respect Alice because they thought of her as a housemaid and not their equal. It was Martin who had to keep reminding them to respect Alice, who has worked hard to help their family through the years.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s never too late to make things right. Martin only found out that Alice was his daughter when she was seventeen, but he made sure to try and make things right with her for the rest of his life.<\/p>\n
