Veronica and Joseph adopted and adored the little girl they found abandoned under a park bridge, but she never spoke a single word to them. However, one night she walked into the couple\u2019s bedroom and cried, \u201cThank you, Mom & Dad,\u201d startling the couple.<\/p>\n

The sky was a lovely pink, and Veronica and Joseph were strolling through the park together. After losing their only child to cancer, the couple found spending time in nature therapeutic.<\/p>\n

As they approached the park\u2019s bridge, Veronica gently rested her head on Joseph\u2019s shoulder and asked, \u201cShould we try for another child, honey? Maybe that will change things. What do you think?\u201d<\/p>\n

Joseph sighed. \u201cWe can, hun,\u201d he said. \u201cBut are you sure about it? I\u2019m not going to rush through it. We need to be in the right mental space before considering this.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re right,\u201d she said after a brief pause, tears welling in her eyes. \u201cI still miss Sammy\u2026 our little boy\u2026 How could God be so cruel and take him away?\u201d<\/p>\n

Veronica was crying into Joseph\u2019s shoulder that day, remembering their late son, when she noticed a pair of eyes staring at them. She was quick to notice a silhouette that vanished beneath the bridge, but she wasn\u2019t prepared for what happened next\u2026<\/p>\n

\u201cOne second, honey,\u201d Veronica brushed away her tears and looked beneath the bridge, only to find a small girl staring at her with curious big brown eyes. She was wearing a dirty frock, and her face, hands, and bare feet were all soiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cHi there, darling,\u201d said Veronica gently. \u201cWhat are you doing here by yourself?\u201d<\/p>\n

The girl continued to stare at her but said nothing. \u201cWould you like us to help you with something?\u201d asked Veronica. \u201cMy name is Veronica, and this is my husband, Joseph. What\u2019s your name?\u201d<\/p>\n

The girl didn\u2019t speak a word.<\/p>\n

Veronica looked at Joseph and sighed. \u201cCan you speak to her? She looks scared.\u201d<\/p>\n

Joseph nodded and approached the girl. \u201cHi, sweetie,\u201d he said. \u201cListen, we\u2019re starving, and we were going to have some sandwiches and hot chocolate at that cafe near the park. Would you like to join us?\u201d<\/p>\n

Love is the most powerful medicine, capable of performing miracles.
\n\u201cYes, sweetie,\u201d said Veronica, extending her hand for the girl to hold. \u201cWould you like to come with us? It\u2019s ok if you don\u2019t want to talk. We could eat something delicious!\u201d<\/p>\n

The girl looked from Veronica to Joseph, then took a step toward Veronica.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d said Veronica encouragingly. \u201cYou can hold my hand!\u201d<\/p>\n

So the girl walked a couple more steps towards Veronica and finally placed her hands in hers. \u201cWonderful, sweetie,\u201d Veronica said, smiling softly. \u201cLet\u2019s go get you some food!\u201d<\/p>\n

Veronica and Joseph took the girl to the cafe and got her sandwiches and a chocolate shake. While she quietly ate the food, everyone around them stared weirdly at her because of her unkempt looks.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wonder what a little girl is doing here in such a state, honey,\u201d Veronica murmured to Joseph. \u201cWe should get her home, but we\u2019ll need to report to the police.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s first get her home, hun,\u201d suggested Joseph. \u201cShe looks like she was in trouble and hungry too.\u201d<\/p>\n

So Veronica and Joseph brought the little girl home and gave her Sam\u2019s comfy bed to sleep in that night. The next morning, they called the cops and CPS, but when the authorities began questioning the girl, she hid behind Veronica.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe seems to trust you,\u201d said the social worker to Veronica. \u201cHave you thought about fostering her? We can\u2019t do anything if she won\u2019t speak up, and we can tell she feels safe here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe haven\u2019t given it a thought yet,\u201d said Joseph. \u201cBut,\u201d he looked at Veronica and said, \u201cI don\u2019t think we are ready for it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNO!\u201d Veronica interrupted him, hugging the girl close to her. \u201cWe can do that. We are certified, too, because\u2026 well\u2026 at one point, we were considering adoption!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGreat then,\u201d said the worker. \u201cYou can keep the girl while we search for her parents or anyone else who knows who she is. Good luck!\u201d<\/p>\n

Even Veronica couldn\u2019t explain why she felt such a strange connection with the girl and decided to keep her at home. She just couldn\u2019t let the girl leave when she grabbed her dress with her tiny fingers and hid behind her as if she knew she would be protected and embraced.<\/p>\n

As time passed, Veronica and Joseph grew to love the girl as if she were their own, and they even adopted her because her family couldn\u2019t be found. But there was one problem. The girl just didn\u2019t speak. Even when she didn\u2019t like something, she didn\u2019t say anything.<\/p>\n

That bothered the couple, so they took her to a doctor, who explained that the girl had been traumatized.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would describe it as a shock,\u201d the doctor said. \u201cYour daughter has been through a terrible ordeal, and she\u2019s still not out of it completely. While medical science can do wonders, I believe what your daughter requires most at this stage are love and care. As her parents, only you can do that.\u201d<\/p>\n

That night, Veronica sobbed, wondering what their little angel had gone through, and she resolved to do everything she could to help her heal.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019ll all be fine, honey,\u201d Joseph said, consoling her. \u201cI have an idea. I\u2019m not sure if it\u2019ll make a significant difference, but we can try!\u201d<\/p>\n

Joseph and Veronica decided to prepare a princess-themed room for their little daughter, Milly, as a surprise. They removed all of Sam\u2019s old belongings as a sign of their healing from his death, and redid the walls, bed, closet, everything!<\/p>\n

\u201cSurprise!\u201d the couple exclaimed when they showed the room to Milly.<\/p>\n

But Milly didn\u2019t show any excitement, and that disappointed them.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid you not like your room, honey?\u201d asked Veronica. \u201cSee, it\u2019s all about princesses! You finally have your own bed too! It\u2019s all yours! Daddy and I know how much you love princesses!\u201d<\/p>\n

Milly looked at them and then at the room, but she didn\u2019t say anything.<\/p>\n

Veronica and Joseph returned to their room, disheartened.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we need to take her to a therapist,\u201d said Joseph. \u201cThat would be the best.\u201d<\/p>\n

Right then, Milly walked into their bedroom. Joseph and Veronica were shocked when they saw she was in tears.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s wrong, sweetie?\u201d Veronica asked. \u201cAre you all right?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThank\u2026 Sky,\u201d she said, and Veronica and Joseph were shocked to hear their daughter speak.<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you, Mom & Dad. The bed\u2026 the princess\u2026 I love it!\u201d she continued. \u201cCan\u2014can you call me Sky?\u201d<\/p>\n

Joseph and Veronica couldn\u2019t help but cry as they hugged Milly. \u201cWe love you, honey,\u201d Joseph added. \u201cWas Sky your previous name?\u201d<\/p>\n

The girl shook her head. \u201cI\u2014I met Mommy and you in the park, and the sky was pink. I am Sky.\u201d<\/p>\n

Veronica smiled. \u201cOf course! Sky you are! Not Milly! You\u2019re Sky for us!\u201d<\/p>\n

Later that day, Milly\/Sky shared her heartbreaking story with Veronica and Joseph. She revealed that she and her birth mother were homeless for years and that after her mother died, she wandered the streets alone and slept under a bridge, in an alley, and wherever she could find a place.<\/p>\n
