A woman walked for miles in the middle of a thunderstorm to save her husband, but when she arrived at the service station, the manager refused to help her.<\/p>\n

It was a dark and stormy night\u2026 Tara Wilson stared out of the service station\u2019s wide window at the pouring rain and sighed. Just then, a streak of lightning flashed across the sky and the sound of thunder split the night.<\/p>\n

Night duty at a gas station wasn\u2019t exactly the exciting job Tara had been dreaming of when she went to journalism school, but unfortunately, she\u2019d had to leave college to support her ailing mother. What Tara didn\u2019t know was that the dreary night was about to become a lot more exciting.<\/p>\n

Even as Tara thought about her life, a frail figure was stumbling towards her in the dark, almost bent double against the force of the wind and the driving train. Tara was almost asleep when a gasping voice interrupted her reverie. \u201cPlease, oh please\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Tara, who was seated behind the service station\u2019s counter, jumped to her feet. In front of her, dripping equal portions of rain and mud was an older woman. Her clothes were plastered with oil, dirt, and mud, and dark streaks of makeup ran down her face.<\/p>\n

\u201cMa\u2019am?\u201d Tara gasped. \u201cI\u2019m sorry, I didn\u2019t hear you come in!\u201d<\/p>\n

The woman took another stumbling step forward and held on to the counter with desperate hands. \u201cPlease,\u201d she gasped again, \u201cI need your help\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh I\u2019ll just bet you do!\u201d a harsh masculine voice interrupted. It was Tara\u2019s boss, Mr. Anderson, the service station\u2019s night manager who must have heard the woman enter from the back office where he spent his nights online on dubious sites.<\/p>\n

Never deny a person in need of help.
\n\u201cI\u2019ve had enough of you derelicts walking in cadging hot food and coffee every time it rains.\u201d Mr. Anderson snarled. \u201cGet out!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease,\u201d the woman said in a calmer voice, and Tara noticed she had a sweet voice and an educated accent. \u201cI need help, my phone is smashed\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHelp?\u201d sneered Mr. Anderson. \u201cDid you drive here? Do you need gas? Or motor oil? Do you have money or a credit card?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d the woman said. \u201cYou don\u2019t understand\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI understand you just fine.\u201d the manager snarled. \u201cGet out! No car and no money, you get nothing!\u201d<\/p>\n

The woman pressed her shaking hands together. \u201cMy husband and I had a car accident, he\u2019s lying unconscious on the road\u2026All I ask is that you make a phone call!\u201d<\/p>\n

Tara made up her mind and stepped forward. \u201cMa\u2019am, I\u2019ll call 911 for you,\u201d she said. She picked up the receiver of the service station\u2019s landline and dialed. She frowned and picked up her cell phone then shook her head.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d she told the woman. \u201cBut the storm probably took down the phone lines and the cell tower. Where did you crash?\u201d<\/p>\n

The woman\u2019s lips were trembling. \u201cMy poor John, oh my poor John\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Tara came around the counter and put her arm around the woman\u2019s sopping-wet shoulders. \u201cCome on, Ma\u2019am, I\u2019ll drive you to him. We\u2019ll take him to the hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n

The manager was enraged. \u201cYou most certainly will not!\u201d he screamed. \u201cYou walk out that door and you\u2019re fired!\u201d<\/p>\n

Tara looked at Mr. Anderson and said quietly. \u201cGo ahead, fire me. But I won\u2019t leave a man dying by the roadside.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you, my dear,\u201d cried the woman. \u201cMy husband is an influential man, you won\u2019t regret this.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo matter who your husband is, I won\u2019t regret it, Ma\u2019am,\u201d said Tara as she settled the woman into her car and buckled her seat belt. \u201cMy mother always taught us to help whenever we could, no matter who it is.\u201d<\/p>\n

With the woman\u2019s guidance, Tara found the scene of the accident. The car was completely destroyed, and by the side of the road and covered with a blanket was an older man.<\/p>\n

\u201cJohn,\u201d the woman cried kneeling by his side, \u201cI\u2019m here, darling, I found help!\u201d The man opened his eyes and tried to speak, but he was obviously too weak. Tara and the woman managed to get him into her car\u2019s backseat, and they drove to the hospital through the pouring rain.<\/p>\n

As soon as the hospital\u2019s staff had the man in hand, Tara asked them to take a look at the woman too, who was shivering from shock and exhaustion, then she allowed herself to sink into one of the waiting room chairs.<\/p>\n

A while later, a tall young doctor came over and asked if she had been the one who\u2019d brought the older couple over. \u201cYes,\u201d Tara said. \u201cAre they alright?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThanks to you!\u201d said the doctor with a smile. \u201cMrs. Smythe told me what you did. Her husband had internal bleeding, and another half an hour would have been too late. We\u2019re also treating Mrs. Smythe for shock and hypothermia.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMrs. Smythe, that\u2019s the lady\u2019s name?\u201d asked Tara. \u201cAnd they are going to be alright?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, you saved their lives,\u201d said the doctor, casting Tara an admiring look. \u201cYou\u2019re a hero!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d said Tara. \u201cMrs. Smythe is the hero. She walked five miles in the rain to get help for her husband, and she never gave up!\u201d<\/p>\n

As it turned out, Mr. Smythe was the owner of the local TV station, and his news team told the story of how Tara lost her job to save two lives. Mr. Anderson was mentioned by name, and his boss fired him for casting the company in a bad light.<\/p>\n

When Mr. Smythe discovered that Tara was a semester away from her journalism major, he hired her as a junior reporter. She was earning a lot more than she had at the service station and doing what she loved.<\/p>\n
