When Carina\u2019s parents kick her out after high school, she has no choice but to navigate her way around life. Years later, after making a success of her life, and her wedding is around the corner, she reaches out to them, only for them to storm into her life, trying to take ownership of what she has worked so hard for.<\/p>\n
\u201cCarina,\u201d my mother said, opening a packet of biscuits. \u201cYou\u2019re going to regret not going to medical school.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cMom,\u201d I replied. \u201cMy brain doesn\u2019t work like Jade\u2019s; she\u2019s the doctor in the family, not me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t see why it can\u2019t be the both of you,\u201d she sniffed, dunking a biscuit into her lukewarm tea. \u201cWhy do you even waste your time with computers? Those machines are not going to make your life comfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n
This wasn\u2019t anything new. My parents hated that I loved computers, and when school was out in the next few months, I was going to be off to college, studying IT.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho cares about cyber security, Carina?\u201d my father asked while he sat down with a pork chop. \u201cSaving people\u2019s lives, honey. That\u2019s what success is. Not playing on computers.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cCyber security is how your important details are protected, Dad,\u201d I would always say, rolling my eyes. \u201cIt\u2019s how countries keep their people safe.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, well, she was learning how to save lives, Carina,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Fast forward 13 years. I\u2019ve got a successful career, a beautiful house, and the most caring fianc\u00e9, Mark, I could have ever asked for.<\/p>\n
\u201cAre you sure that I should invite my parents to the wedding?\u201d I asked Mark as we took a walk one evening.<\/p>\n
\u201cYes, darling,\u201d he said, taking my hand. \u201cWhy wouldn\u2019t you? I\u2019m so proud of who you are and where you\u2019ve come from. You\u2019ve done all of this on your own.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut they\u2019ve been such horrible people, Mark. I mean, they kicked me out of their home when I got into college. I had to work as a dog groomer to make enough money to cover the rent for my tiny apartment,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n
\u201cYes, I understand that,\u201d my fianc\u00e9 said diplomatically. \u201cBut you\u2019ve made it now. And you\u2019ve made it without them. Look, honey. Our home is yours; it\u2019s in your name, and I love that for us.\u201d<\/p>\n
Eventually, I gave in. The excitement of our wedding planning made me realize that I was proud of myself and where I had come from.<\/p>\n
\u201cI did it without their support,\u201d I told Mark as I fried bacon for us one morning. \u201cSo, I\u2019m going to invite them.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mark smiled at me while he poured milk into his coffee.<\/p>\n
\u201cGood, this is a big moment for us,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
When my parents and sister arrived, they were stunned by my house. They assumed that I was renting a room of the house. Of course, they didn\u2019t think that I was capable of something bigger and better than that.<\/p>\n
\u201cCarina! You own this entire house?\u201d my father asked, his eyes wide with disbelief.<\/p>\n
\u201cYes, Dad,\u201d I said, wheeling my mother\u2019s suitcase in, they seemed to think that they were spending the night. \u201cI worked hard for this.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWow, I didn\u2019t expect this,\u201d my sister said, looking around.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo, I thought that we could do dinner at a restaurant tonight, and then come home for dessert and coffee. You guys can spend time with Mark and my in-laws.\u201d<\/p>\n
They were going to be over at any moment, the first meet and greet almost underway.<\/p>\n
But that\u2019s when the entitlement kicked in.<\/p>\n
My mother\u2019s eyes narrowed as she scanned the living room, taking in my television and other things.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou know, Carina,\u201d she declared, her tone leaving no room for argument. \u201cWe deserve to live in comfort after all we\u2019ve done for you.\u201d<\/p>\n
Then, she promptly sat down on the couch.<\/p>\n
\u201cMom, what are you talking about?\u201d I was incredulous. \u201cThis is my home. I bought it with my own money. You did absolutely nothing for me after high school.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBut we\u2019re your parents,\u201d she insisted. \u201cWe should live better than our children. It\u2019s our right. It\u2019s the only right thing.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou can\u2019t be serious,\u201d I said, my voice rising. \u201cJade still lives with you because you wanted to baby her after her night shifts. And me? You didn\u2019t care. This isn\u2019t my responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n
My father stepped in at this point, crossing his arms.<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter everything we\u2019ve sacrificed for you, this is the least you can do.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cJade needs a place to stay, too,\u201d my mother said.<\/p>\n
\u201cJade is an adult,\u201d I snapped. \u201cShe made her choice to live with you, just like I did.\u201d<\/p>\n
I felt bad that I was speaking about Jade in this way, especially because she was sitting on the couch and looking at my plants.<\/p>\n
But my sister had chosen my parents when they kicked me out. She barely kept in contact with me, only stopping to text me on my birthday or Christmas morning.<\/p>\n
At that moment, the door opened, and my future in-laws walked in. I had always been close to them, wanting to find parental figures in Mark\u2019s parents.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve been hearing this entire conversation from outside,\u201d Tom said.<\/p>\n
\u201cCarina\u2019s achievements are hers,\u201d my future mother-in-law, Carol, said firmly. \u201cShe\u2019s worked hard for this, and she deserves every bit of it.\u201d<\/p>\n
My mother turned to her, eyes blazing.<\/p>\n
\u201cWho the hell are you? We have rights to this house; she\u2019s our daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n
Carol didn\u2019t flinch; she stood with her arms folded, a smile playing across her face.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy did you remember that only now? Where have you been all these years? Being her parents doesn\u2019t mean that you can take credit for her hard work. Carina has earned this.\u201d<\/p>\n
My parents were stunned into silence, and Jade couldn\u2019t even look up.<\/p>\n
\u201cCarina invited you to celebrate her wedding, to celebrate the union of her and our son. To join our families. She did not invite you to berate her and have her hard work claimed,\u201d Tom said.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe owes you nothing but respect because you raised her, but that doesn\u2019t mean giving up her home,\u201d Carol said.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut we\u2019re her family,\u201d my mother said, clearly not expecting this level of pushback.<\/p>\n
\u201cOnly by blood,\u201d Mark said, stepping into the house. \u201cFamily supports one another. They don\u2019t tear you down. And that\u2019s what you\u2019ve done to Carina for years.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou should be so proud of your girl,\u201d Carol continued. \u201cShe\u2019s done so much for us. I am so proud of her. Tom, too. She\u2019s the daughter that I wanted all along.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mark found his way to me, wrapping his arm around my waist.<\/p>\n
I looked at my parents, seeing the dawning realization on their faces.<\/p>\n
\u201cI love you, I do,\u201d I said. \u201cBut this is my life, and you\u2019ve only been in it again for five minutes, and you\u2019re already demanding things of me. Is that fair? I\u2019ve worked too hard to let anyone take that away from me.\u201d<\/p>\n
My father sighed heavily.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe didn\u2019t mean to upset you,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThen respect my choice,\u201d I said gently. \u201cBe present for my wedding, but after that, you can go your own way again.\u201d<\/p>\n
After the confrontation, my parents seemed to understand, if only a little.<\/p>\n
When we left to the restaurant, everyone was subdued, except for Mark and my in-laws. I didn\u2019t see a point in canceling the dinner because of the confrontation.<\/p>\n
We sat down to eat, everyone lost in their own thoughts while Carol made comments about seeing me in my dress.<\/p>\n
\u201cMark, you\u2019re in for such a treat. Carina looks beautiful in that dress,\u201d she said, digging into her salmon.<\/p>\n
I smiled at my future mother-in-law. I always knew that she loved me, but her comments of the day had truly made me realize just how much.<\/p>\n
I was lucky. I had gotten lucky with Mark, but even more so with his parents.<\/p>\n
I watched as my mother\u2019s face fell when Carol went on, talking about the dress fitting. But I didn\u2019t have it in me to make her feel better.<\/p>\n
After dinner, we left the restaurant, parting ways with my parents and sister.<\/p>\n
