Sarah looked into the mirror and tucked the fine gold chain she always wore out of sight. This was supposed to be the happiest day of her life, but she was on the verge of tears.<\/p>\n
\u201cNow, don\u2019t you cry!\u201d said the makeup artist pouting, and quickly dusting a sheer veil of face powder under Sarah\u2019s eyes, \u201cYou\u2019ll spoil my work!\u201d<\/p>\n
Across the room, Sarah\u2019s mother smiled thinly. \u201cTears of joy,\u201d she said, but she knew they were tears of grief.<\/p>\n

Sarah adjusted her wedding dress and felt the comforting weight of the engagement ring against her chest. A delicate ring with a tiny diamond, so different from the 15-carat monstrosity now weighing down her left hand.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is your choice,\u201d Sarah told herself softly. \u201cAnd now that David is gone, it doesn\u2019t really matter who you marry\u2026\u201d The man she was marrying was pleasant enough and kind, but he was her father\u2019s choice.<\/p>\n
Frank Melville was the son of Sarah\u2019s father\u2019s partner, and their marriage would consolidate a business relationship that had lasted for decades and had made both men millionaires many times over.<\/p>\n
Her true love was dead, dead three years ago in a horrific car accident, her love, David O\u2019Reilly. David had been her driver when Sarah was a young celebrity chased by the paparazzi who lived on recording the misdeeds of the young and rich.<\/p>\n

\nShe felt ill and helpless, and she called David. Within minutes he was there to pick her up at the door of the club. He jumped out of the car and helped her walk to the curb, where her legs had folded.<\/p>\n
To Sarah\u2019s shame, she vomited, and David held her head and rubbed her back, murmuring senseless comforting words. He carried her into the car, cleaned her face, took care of her.<\/p>\n
From then on, it had been Sarah watching David, and before long she\u2019d convinced him to go out with her on a date. Before long they were in love, and one day David presented her with a delicate circle of gold and its tiny crumb of a diamond.<\/p>\n

That happy day she dreamed of never came. Instead, there was a phone call from the police while she was with her family in the Hamptons, and Sarah saw her father\u2019s face pale.<\/p>\n

Sarah remembered that she started screaming and that her father held her in his arms, rocking her like a baby, while her mother sat across the room twisting her elegant hands together and biting her perfectly tinted lips.<\/p>\n
That had been the last day of her old life, a life in which she still believed in love that lasted forever and happy endings. To her parents\u2019 chagrin, Sarah announced her pregnancy two months later.<\/p>\n

\u201cSarah, who was once known as the city\u2019s most beautiful \u2018bad girl\u2019 is marrying Frank Melville III, the son of the electronics millionaire, Frank Melville II.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNot if I can help it!\u201d David cried, and turned off the TV. His mind went back to that terrible day two years ago when he\u2019d woken up in a hospital bed, his legs dead and useless.<\/p>\n
His mother, who suffered from emphysema, had been at his bedside, crying. Then Sarah\u2019s father, the great Greg Farmin walked in. \u201cYou\u2019re crippled,\u201d he\u2019d said bluntly. \u201cWhat kind of a life is that for Sarah? You know what she\u2019s like. She\u2019ll stand by you, marry you \u2014 marry half a man.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat do you want?\u201d David had asked hoarsely.<\/p>\n
\u201cI want you to stay away from Sarah. Let her believe you are dead, let her live a normal happy life,\u201d Farmin said. \u201cAnd in return, both you and your mother will receive the best care money can buy, as long as you live.\u201d<\/p>\n
So David agreed, and Farmin kept his promise. David\u2019s condition improved slowly, and the doctors believed he was on his way to a full recovery but his mother succumbed to her illness.<\/p>\n
\u201cI can\u2019t let her do this,\u201d David said to himself. \u201cI have to tell her I\u2019m alive, tell her she has a choice.\u201d And so when Sarah walked slowly down the aisle on her father\u2019s arm, David was sitting in the church waiting for his moment.<\/p>\n
When Sarah reached Frank and his best man, her father tenderly raised her veil and kissed her forehead. Farmin was about to hand her love to Frank when a voice interrupted the solemn moment.<\/p>\n
\u201cSarah,\u201d said a voice Sarah heard only in her dreams. \u201cSarah, please don\u2019t do this.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sarah turned around and saw David sitting in a wheelchair in the middle of the aisle, a bunch of wildflowers in his lap.<\/p>\n
\u201cDavid?\u201d she whispered. \u201cOh my God, David?\u201d She raised a trembling hand to her throat. \u201cI\u2019m mad\u2026I must be mad\u2026\u201d Was this a ghost? A hallucination?<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s me,\u201d David said, wheeling his chair towards her. \u201cI\u2019m alive Sarah, but I thought\u2026 I was crippled and I thought you\u2019d be better off without me.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWithout you?\u201d Sarah gasped. \u201cI\u2019ve been DEAD without you! The only thing that\u2019s kept me alive was our baby, our little Rachel.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBaby?\u201d asked David. \u201cWe had a baby?\u201d he turned his burning eyes onto Greg Farmin. \u201cYou never told me there was a baby!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cDaddy!\u201d cried Sarah. \u201cYou knew that David was alive and you didn\u2019t tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI wanted to protect you,\u201d Greg Farmin cried defensively. He turned to David. \u201cYou gave me your word and you took my money\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou paid him to stay away?\u201d Sarah screamed. \u201cYou broke my heart!\u201d Sarah turned to Frank and said with a sad smile, \u201cI\u2019m sorry Frank, I can\u2019t marry you, I\u2019m going to marry the father of my child.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sarah walked back down the aisle towards David and threw her arms around him. \u201cYou marry that man, and you\u2019ll be left with nothing,\u201d screamed Greg Farmin. \u201cYou won\u2019t get a cent.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sarah\u2019s grandmother stood up and looked at her son with icy eyes. \u201cShut up, Greg, you\u2019re a fool, and it\u2019s not your money to dispose of. It\u2019s mine, and after this, I think your share will go straight to Sarah and her young man!\u201d<\/p>\n
Sarah and David were married and lived with their little daughter in a small house they bought with their own money even though Gran had wanted to buy them a luxury apartment.
