Every year, he\u2019d pack his bags and leave our two kids and me behind.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mom doesn\u2019t want in-laws on the trip, Layla,\u201d he said. \u201cYou know this. It\u2019s the same story every year. But still, you continue to ask about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

My husband rolled his eyes and sat on the couch, his hands wrapped tightly around his phone.<\/p>\n

I swallowed that excuse for twelve long years, trying not to let it get to me. There were only so many battles that I wanted to fight, and this wasn\u2019t one of them.<\/p>\n

But then, a few days before Tom was scheduled to leave for his trip, I was sitting on the couch scrolling through socials.<\/p>\n

I needed to know more information before I blew up at my mother-in-law. As much as Denise seemed to have an issue with me, I knew that if I asked her straight up, she would give me an answer.<\/p>\n

So, I decided to call Sadie, Tom\u2019s brother\u2019s wife. She was fairly new to the family, with them having only been married for about a year now.<\/p>\n

\u201cHey, Layla,\u201d she said, answering the phone immediately.<\/p>\n

\u201cHi!\u201d I replied, trying to pick up my energy so that she wouldn\u2019t immediately think that something was wrong or that I was trying to attack her.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s up?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was just scrolling through socials,\u201d I said slowly. \u201cAnd I saw your photos from last year\u2019s vacation. Everything looked amazing!\u201d<\/p>\n

Sadie giggled.<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you,\u201d she said. \u201cI was living my island life. I\u2019m still so sad that you couldn\u2019t end up coming because you didn\u2019t have anyone to take care of the kids.\u201d<\/p>\n

So that\u2019s what they thought. That I hadn\u2019t been able to make their trip because of my children.<\/p>\n

\u201cListen, Layla,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019ve got to go, I\u2019m getting another call. I\u2019ll call you this evening!\u201d<\/p>\n

She hung up immediately.<\/p>\n

I knew that my next move would be going to my mother-in-law. If anyone was at the root of this lie, it would be Denise.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy don\u2019t you allow Tom to take us on vacation? Don\u2019t you consider us your family?\u201d I asked as my mother-in-law opened the door and let me in.<\/p>\n

\u201cDarling, what are you talking about?\u201d my mother-in-law asked, genuinely perplexed. \u201cMy husband and sons go on vacation every year, but they\u2019ve never taken me with. Roger said that none of the females go on these trips. It\u2019s just the boys.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWait, what?\u201d I asked, stunned.<\/p>\n

\u201cTell me what you know,\u201d she said, pouring a glass of juice.<\/p>\n

Shocked, I spilled everything. The photos, Tom\u2019s lies, the years of being left behind with and without my sons.<\/p>\n

To her credit, my mother-in-law sat and listened in stunned silence.<\/p>\n

We arrived at the vacation spot with a mix of anger and nerves. It was different, actually being here, rather than seething from our spots on the couch at home.<\/p>\n

As the sun set, we drove to their rented house. The people at the front desk were only too helpful when we told them that we were the wives.<\/p>\n

Music blasted from the open windows, and the garden was filled with people swimming and lounging around.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s go,\u201d my mother-in-law said, pulling a large hat over her eyes. We walked in, blending into the crowd. The party atmosphere worked in our favor because nobody paid us any attention.<\/p>\n

In one of the downstairs rooms, we found my father-in-law, his lips locked with a woman I didn\u2019t recognize. The shock on his face when he saw his wife was almost comical and straight out of a movie.<\/p>\n

My mother-in-law didn\u2019t say a word. She just stood there, radiating fury.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know,\u201d my father-in-law stammered, clearly rattled by our presence.<\/p>\n

My mother-in-law stayed with him, her silent rage filling the room, while I continued to search upstairs. I found Tom in one of the bedrooms, his arm around another woman, both of them laughing at something on her phone.<\/p>\n

The sound of my gasp made them both turn.<\/p>\n

\u201cLayla, what are you doing here?\u201d he stuttered, scrambling to get up.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat am I doing here? What are you doing here, Tom?\u201d I asked, my voice surprisingly steady. \u201cYou\u2019ve been lying to me for twelve years!\u201d<\/p>\n

The woman next to him slipped out of the room, sensing the storm that was about to hit. But I didn\u2019t care about her.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re done,\u201d I said. \u201cI\u2019m taking the kids and I\u2019m leaving. You can explain this to your mother.\u201d<\/p>\n

With that, I turned and walked out.<\/p>\n

The flight back home was a blur.<\/p>\n

I looked at her silently for a moment. It was as if this quick trip had aged my mother-in-law more than anything.<\/p>\n

\u201cI agree with you,\u201d my mother-in-law admitted. \u201cThere\u2019s nothing left for me in my marriage. Roger didn\u2019t care about me at all. And Tom didn\u2019t care about you or the boys all this time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI already told him that I want a divorce,\u201d I told her.<\/p>\n

When we got back home, Denise packed all her belongings and moved into my home, and in turn, I packed all of Tom\u2019s things and left them in boxes in her home.<\/p>\n
